I. DEPARTMENT INFORMATION


Job Description Summary:
The Department of Epidemiology at the Milken Institute School of Public Health at the George Washington University is seeking a Biostatistician II to assist the department in conducting an NIH funded prospective multi-site longitudinal cohort study, the DC Cohort. This study captures clinical information on persons with HIV receiving outpatient HIV in care in Washington, DC at 14 clinical sites and has been operating since 2009 in partnership with numerous clinical providers in Washington, DC, the DC Department of Health, and the National Institutes of Health. The Biostatistician will join the DC Cohort Analytic Group and will work on various analyses as they relate to the DC Cohort. This biostatistician position will be filled by someone who can provide statistical design expertise, data management, and data analyses to answer hypothesis driven epidemiological analyses and will participate as a co-author in preparation of scientific manuscripts and presentations reporting study results.
The work involves analyzing a complex longitudinal multisite dataset and familiarity with both cross-sectional and longitudinal analyses (e.g., Kaplan Meier, Cox, Survival Analyses, etc.), will be necessary. Using a wide degree of creativity and latitude, the core responsibilities of this position are to make detailed observations, analyze data, and interpret results, with limited guidance from the Principal Investigator.
Responsibilities Include

  • Prepares datasets for analysis and conducts data analysis using advanced statistical procedures using SAS or other statistical programming software.
  • Creates programming analysis related macros using SAS.
  • Develops and maintains reporting systems using SAS or other statistical programming software.
  • Performs data analysis using advanced statistical procedures using statistical software (SAS and R) under supervision of senior statisticians.
  • Performs data management (auditing, editing & analysis) and quality control of study databases.
  • Collaborates in the development of analytical plans for addressing selected research questions.
  • Documents all new processes and procedures created in the above tasks.
  • Collaborates in the design of studies and with medical investigators to implement methods in collaboration with DC Cohort Analytics Group.
  • Participates in project development from beginning to end. Participates as a member of a multi-disciplinary team of programmers and researchers to ensure deliverables are completed efficiently.
  • Contributes portions of abstracts, posters, reports and manuscripts for major publications in leading health, medical and other journals and presentations of results.
  • Participates in general staff meetings or study-specific meetings as required. Communicates with the GWU Biostatistics Center staff and epidemiology team as needed.


Performs other duties as assigned. The omission of specific duties does not preclude the supervisor from assigning duties that are logically related to the position.
Minimum Qualifications:
Qualified candidates will hold a MS or MPH in Biostatistics, Statistics, Health Data Science, Epidemiology, or related field, plus 3 years of relevant experience. Relevant experience must be progressive Master's level or equivalent experience in Statistics, biostatistics, health data science, or related field. Degree must be conferred by the start date of the position.
Additional Required Licenses/Certifications/Posting Specific Minimum Qualifications:
Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with statistical programming using SAS is desired.
  • Experience or training in analyzing longitudinal datasets is preferred.
  • Evidence of strong scientific writing skills.
  • Moderate or stronger knowledge of multi-variable regression modeling (linear, logistic) and moderate knowledge of structural equation modeling or propensity score matching is desired.
  • Prior experience in HIV epidemiology is preferred.
  • Excellent oral communication.
  • Evidence of ability to work both independently and with a team, and to manage time across multiple projects.

Hiring Range $61,899.53 - $100,660.14
