Position Summary |
The American Museum of Natural History is one of the world's preeminent scientific and cultural institutions, and has as its mission to discover, interpret and disseminate information about human cultures, the natural world and the universe through a wide-ranging program of scientific research, education and exhibition.
The Invertebrate Zoology department is seeking a part-time Field Assistant, stationed at the Museum's Southwestern Research Station (
SWRS) in Portal, Arizona, to assist Curator Jesse Barber with field research. The Field Assistant will capture bats and hold them in temporary captivity while performing high-speed filming experiments. The position will involve extensive mistnetting and captive care work.
This position qualifies for housing at the
SWRS for the duration of employment.
Job duties include, but are not limited to:
- Capture bats, including by setting up mistnets, removing bats from nets, transporting bats to holding cages and taking detailed notes.
- Collect moths, including by setting up black lighting systems, identifying appropriate moths, placing them in collecting vials and storing them in appropriate conditions.
- Provide general care for captive bats, including by feeding and watering, performing general health checks and administering necessary medicines.
- Conduct experiments involving 3-D, infrared, high-speed filming of bat/moth interactions, including technology setup, troubleshooting, detailed data logging and data backups.
The expected salary for the Field Assistant is $22/hour. This position is overtime-eligible.
Pay will be determined based on several factors. The hiring range for the position at commencement is based on the type of work and the scope of responsibilities. The salary and placement offered is based on a number of individualized factors, including, but not limited to, skills, knowledge, training, education, credentials, areas of specialization and depth and scope of experience. |
Minimum Qualifications |
- B.S. degree in biology or another related field.
- Two years experience working with bats, both mistnetting in the field and performing laboratory experiments in a lab or field-placed flight structure.

Physical Demands |
- Must be able to remain in a stationary position (sitting or standing) for prolonged periods.
- Must be able to occasionally lift up to 20 pounds.
- Must be able to move about the Museum campus.
- Positioning/change of positioning: Must be able to frequently position oneself/body to accomplish job duties.
- Balancing: Maintaining body equilibrium to prevent falling.
- Climbing: Ascending or descending physical structures.
