The Student Outreach and Retention (SOAR) Center is a unique center created through advocacy and institutionalized through an undergraduate student referendum. The mission of the center is to cultivate authentic student leaders who aspire to develop innovative, student-initiated outreach and retention programs. The center fosters critical dialogue, and mentorship to improve college access, readiness, and retention rates for historically underrepresented students in higher education.

SOAR is a dynamic space that empowers student scholars through praxis to advocate and develop a transformative and equitable educational environment where students can use their education as a vehicle for social impact.


Your Role on the Team

Under the general supervision of the Director of the SOAR Center, the Senior Retention Program Specialist manages and maintains the services, programs, and initiatives intended to advance and promote the Center's mission, vision, and goals. This position provides direct oversight of the co-curricular programs, initiatives, and operations that promote student retention including holistic leadership development, academic achievement, and civic engagement initiatives. They support student-initiated outreach and retention efforts and advocate for student needs.

Using knowledge and skills as a seasoned, experienced Student Services professional, performs the full range of duties and responsibilities within a Student Life specialization. Assesses situations and determines appropriate action or referral. Works independently under general supervision to provide information and interpretation of complex policies, procedures, and regulations. Identifies and responds to student needs for programs, services, and crisis intervention.

The Senior Retention Program Specialist supervises student staff, volunteers, and interns, by advising on program and service development and implementation. Additionally, the position assists the Director in the daily facility management and maintenance of the Center by determining usage policies through needs-based assessment and/or student focus groups.

The expected pay range for this recruitment is $58,600- $78,000 (Annual).

Required:

  • Thorough knowledge of advising and counseling techniques.
  • Strong knowledge of common University-specific computer application programs and knowledge of University and departmental principles and procedures involved in risk assessment and evaluating risks as to likelihood and consequences.
  • Thorough knowledge of Student Affairs / Student Life specialization.
  • Skills in judgment and decision-making, problem solving, identifying measures of system performance and the actions to improve performance.
  • Abilities in project management, problem identification and reasoning skills.
  • 2-3 years of related experience

Preferred:

  • Ability to develop original ideas to solve problems.
