The Department of Neurological Surgery's faculty members, working and teaching at Orange County's only university hospital, are committed to training the next generation of exceptional neuroscientists while providing care to patients with a wide range of neurosurgical conditions, including spinal disorders, traumatic brain injury and trigeminal neuralgia.

Our state-of-the-art teaching facilities allow for trainee exposure to advanced radiosurgical procedures with the latest technologies using the Cyberknife and the Gamma Knife. Our faculty surgeons also have extensive experience in minimally invasive spinal surgery and microsurgery for the treatment of epilepsy, movement disorders, pain and stroke, as well as brain tumors and intracranial aneurysms.

Department faculty members' research programs include collaborations with other medical research organizations, such as UCI's Reeve-Irvine Research Center, a prominent group of scientists working to find new treatments for spinal cord injury.

The department has a fully accredited residency program offering a variety of clinical activities and extensive training at multiple sites, including UCI Medical Center, Children's Hospital of Orange County, Kaiser Foundation Hospital in Anaheim and Hoag Memorial Hospital Presbyterian in Newport Beach.


Your Role on the Team

Under the general direction of the Chief Administrative Officer, the incumbent is responsible for the Department of Neurological Surgery and Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation's fiscal related matters including budgeting, financial analysis, contracts and grants, and post award management. Funding sources include general funds, federal/state contracts and grants, private gifts and grants, clinical trials, start-up funds, clinical revenue model funds, professional fees, and sales service income. Under the general direction of the Chief Administrative Officer and Chairs, incumbent provides high level policy analysis and interpretation and performs independent problem solving that requires interaction with, physicians, Principal Investigators, laboratory staff and various levels of accounting and sponsored projects personnel. Strategizes and recommends innovative fiscal solutions to the Administrator. Under the general direction of the Chief Administrative Officer and Chairs, incumbent is responsible for providing financial analysis and reporting on all account funds, budgeting, projections and fiscal close functions. Establishes and maintains complex financial control and reporting systems.
Administers department payroll certifications.


What It Takes to be Successful

Required:

  • Working knowledge of Cost Accounting Standards (CAS) and good business practices, accounting principles and cost accounting standards.
  • Previous experience with processing financial journals and fund transfers.
  • Working knowledge of federal regulations governing research activity: OMB A-21, A110 and A- 133, including requirements for time and effort reporting.
  • Working knowledge of NIH policies governing the conduct of research.
  • Demonstrated organization skills and ability to prioritize assignments when faced with heavy workload and competing deadlines.
  • Proven ability to work independently and carry out assigned tasks reliably with minimal direction.
  • Demonstrated skills to independently analyze situations, interpret data, define problems and/or objectives, identify relevant factors, and formulate logical conclusions and recommendations.
  • Experience in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with all levels of the campus community. Interpersonal skills to effectively communicate in a professional manner in all circumstances.
  • Demonstrated skill in handling detailed transactions throughout tedious review and approval process.
  • Demonstrated ability to maintain high level of confidentiality.
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Office products including Word, Excel, Outlook and PowerPoint.
  • 5-7 years of relevant work experience, or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Preferred:

  • Previous UC system experience.
  • Familiarity with UCI on-line financial systems including General Ledger, Employee Database, and Data Warehouse.
  • Familiarity with UC accounting, contract and grants award management, purchasing, and equipment management policies, procedures and practices.
  • Familiarity with faculty salary compensation processes.
