About the Department:

Disability Services ensures equitable access to George Mason University's programs and services for qualified students with disabilities. A qualified student with a disability is a student with a disability who meets the academic and technical standards required for admission or participation in the university's education program and services. As defined in the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, a person has a disability if they have a physical or mental impairment that substantially limits one or more major life activities of such individual; a record of such an impairment; or is regarded as having such an impairment.

About the Position:

This position's primary objective is to provide administrative support to the Disability Services office. Job duties include answering the office phone; greeting students and Mason community at the front desk, explaining disability services, including the registration process and procedures; providing students with their accommodation letters when requested; making referrals after assessing needs or concerns; assisting with testing center duties; and working on special projects.

This position is not eligible for international visa sponsorship.

Responsibilities:

Provides administrative support to the office to include:



  • Front desk support, answers phones, and schedules meetings;
  • Maintains staff calendars as appropriate;
  • Files, photocopies, and organizes confidential records;
  • Modifies and maintains databases;
  • Assists in preparing and proofreading letters, documents, and fliers/informational material;
  • Monitors the main office email account;
  • Orders food for all office events;
  • Supports/trains other front office staff;
  • Maintains a filing system for documentation;
  • Accesses and reviews student files prior to giving to Disability Services Specialist;
  • Collects incoming intake forms and documentation, and provides to Disability Services Specialist in a timely manner;
  • Manages the process of renewing accommodation letters every semester;
  • Provides coverage for testing center when needed and during high volume testing days;
  • Administers exams to students registered in Disability Services;
  • Explains testing center policies and procedures to students; and
  • Other duties as assigned.


Required Qualifications:



  • High school diploma or equivalent;
  • Experience with Microsoft Office applications;
  • Experience with database maintenance and data entry;
  • Progressive experience performing receptionist duties, clerical/administrative and support tasks, and providing support/training to other front office staff;
  • Proficient knowledge and editing capabilities in written English;
  • Demonstrated organizational skills and detail-oriented attributes;
  • Effective communication and written skills;
  • Ability and willingness to work as a part of a collaborative team;
  • Ability to work effectively with people from diverse backgrounds; and
  • Ability to work in-person.


Preferred Qualifications:



  • Associate's degree in related field;
  • Experience in a post-secondary education environment;
  • Experience working with individuals with disabilities;
  • Working knowledge of post-secondary educational environments;
  • Knowledge of or ability to learn relevant confidentiality protocols and procedures; and
  • Proficient level technology skills with database maintenance and data entry.
