Job Summary SEIU 73

Under the general direction of the Director of Environmental Health, assists program managers by providing guidance to field staff in environmental programs. Conducts inspections and investigations in a variety of settings and programs. Collects samples, performs evaluations, documents findings in a clear, concise, and legible manner and submits reports for correction of public health hazards. Interfaces with contractors, architects, engineers, well drillers, food establishment operators, septic system installers, public officials and general public concerning complex technical problems. Assists in the planning, development and execution of routine and specialized environmental health programs.

Typical Duties

* Provides technical consultation to field personnel in program areas as required. May accompany Sanitarians on field investigations to assist in evaluating and solving environmental health problems. Assists in training staff as required.
* Performs supportive administrative and field duties in specialized environmental health programs as assigned by central administration.
* Provides assistance to central administrative staff in overall planning, development, maintenance and evaluation of specific environmental health programs.
* Works with and assists local municipal officials in evaluating and resolving environmental health problems in their jurisdictions.
* Assures operational efficiency and productivity for program implementation in accordance with existing ordinances, regulations and standards.
* Makes recommendations to central administrative staff for enforcement action to the State's Attorney to secure compliance with applicable ordinances; assists central administrative staff in the preparation of materials for possible litigation.
* Submits inspection/investigative reports and statistical records to central administration for review; maintains files and records of complaints and program information/statistics as required.
* On occasion may make presentations before various groups regarding environmental health issues and/or problems as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

* Bachelor's degree or higher in Environmental Health Sciences OR a Bachelor's degree with at least thirty (30) semester hours in basic sciences.
* Three (3) years of professional work experience as an environmental health Inspector in various environmental program areas.
* Current licensure as an Environmental Health Practitioner (LEHP) in the State of Illinois.
* Valid driver's license and an insured vehicle for field duties or an acceptable and reliable means of transportation.
* Must participate in assigned trainings, including on-line training in the National Incident Management Systems (NIMS) offered through the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) to obtain mandated certifications.

Preferred Qualifications
* Masters degree in Environmental Health Sciences from an accredited college or university

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES AND OTHER CHARACTERISTICS

* Knowledge of local, county, state and federal regulations relating to environmental health, public health standards and regulations.
* Knowledge of chemistry, bacteriology, entomology, toxicology and epidemiology as they relate to environmental health and public health protection.
* Knowledge of sanitation principles, methods and techniques.
* Knowledge of supervisory principles and ability to train and evaluate staff.
* Strong written and communication skills with the ability to write investigative reports and communicate effectively with individuals from diverse backgrounds.
* Strong organizational skills.
* Ability to travel throughout Cook County.

Physical and Environmental Demands
This position is functioning within a healthcare environment. The incumbent is responsible for
adherence to all hospital and department specific safety requirements. This includes but is not limited
to the following policies and procedures: complying with Personal Protective Equipment
requirements, hand washing and sanitizing practices, complying with department specific engineering
and work practice controls and any other work area safety precautions as specified by hospital wide
policy and departmental procedures.
