The Department of Roads and Grounds in Facilities and Services at West Virginia University is currently accepting applications for a Maintenance Woker I.

About the Opportunity

Under the supervision of the Supervisor and/or Trades Specialist Lead, this position shall perform skilled landscape maintenance duties. These will include the repair and construction of steps, sidewalks, roads, parking lots, etc. The Maintenance Worker I will operate all Roads & Grounds equipment in performing these duties. Shall work with other crafts as needed.

What You'll Do



  • Shall operate equipment such as payloaders, backhoes, asphalt pavers, rollers, forklifts, small dump trucks, landscape equipment, and skid loaders. Operates tractors, lawn maintenance equipment, and power tools needed to perform landscape construction and maintenance.
  • Assist with construction and maintains landscape structures while using materials such as concrete, bituminous concrete, flagstone, field stone, sculptured stone, brick, blocks, pavers, retaining wall blocks, and landscape timbers.
  • Assist in the application of sealers, anti-spalling compounds, adhesives, etc. in performing normal duties. This includes the finishing of concrete according to standard practices and procedures.
  • Performs landscaping tasks including the planting of trees and ornamental shrubs. Seeds and slices lawns, aerates, fertilizes, and applies soil amendments using tractors and power equipment. Follows verbal or written instructions and interprets blueprints that pertain to landscape construction.
  • Provides for the proper preventive maintenance of all equipment including such things as oil, fuel, belts, tires, batteries, greasing, etc. required on a daily basis for all Roads & Grounds equipment.
  • Performs repairs on all equipment as needed. Completes service and maintenance on equipment and trucks such as greasing, oil changes, etc. Assists the mechanics with major repairs.
  • Performs preventive maintenance on all equipment involving daily and/or weekly inspections.
  • Relocates offices and classrooms within buildings and throughout campus by lifting, loading and unloading furniture, file cabinets, boxes, etc. onto hand trucks, dollies, and box vans for transportation. May require removing desk components, doors, and shelves to ease in relocations. Moves, sets-up, rearranges, and erects tables, chairs, platforms, bleachers, tents, displays, etc. May assist in the design for special event set-ups. Reads floor plans and layouts for concerts, registration, commencement, and other special statewide University affiliated events. Drives box vans, forklifts, front loaders, small dump trucks, and operates lift gates. Operates, maintains, and services equipment and tools that are used while performing moves, set-ups, sanitation services, and snow removal.
  • Operates motor vehicle (i.e. car, box van, pick-up truck, fork lift, front loader, small dump truck...) to transport people, to deliver/receive surplus for inventory control, to deliver, receive, or remove surplus materials for shops and equipment throughout the campus and community and statewide. Unloads and stores supplies, rotating stock and equipment at various job sites. Establishes and maintains inventory of departments throughout institutional buildings, warehouse, or stockroom on equipment e.g. tables, chairs, tents, staging, platforms.
  • Collects and properly disposes of trash and litter throughout institutional buildings and grounds, including cleaning of trash receptacles and assisting sanitation vehicles operators. Collects and properly stores hazardous materials, e.g. muriatic acid, propane, diesel fuel, anti-freeze, chlorine, alcohol, and sodium bi-carbonate.
  • Removes graffiti from walls and sidewalks; performs all outside cleaning activities as required. Operates high-pressure washers, sandblasters, and other power equipment to complete these tasks. Operates blowers and walk-behind sweepers to clean and remove debris in maintaining the appearance of institutional grounds.
  • Removes snow from sidewalks, steps, roads, and parking lots by means of trucks, tractors, power brooms, and hand tools.
  • Must be able to respond to emergency situations on all occasions and must be available for telephone contact during all emergency and unsafe environmental conditions.
  • Maintains cleanliness of assigned areas by mechanical or hand methods.
  • Performs duties as needed to complete seasonal change over on all trucks and equipment.


Pay Grade: 9

Work Hours: 1:00pm - 9:00pm

Qualifications

  • High School diploma or GED required
  • A minimum of one (1) year in each of the following:

    • Experience operating various types of grounds maintenance equipment
    • Experience in a commercial landscaping environment.
    • Experience repairing or constructing landscape structures using a variety of masonry materials and concrete.


  • Any equivalent combination of related education and/or experience will be considered
  • All qualifications must be met by the time of employment.


Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities



  • Ability to read, write, and perform simple mathematical calculations.
  • Ability to comprehend and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Demonstrated ability to operate heavy construction equipment, grounds maintenance equipment, and small trucks.
  • Ability to lift, bend, stoop, walk, reach, and stand for extended periods of time.
  • Ability to operate equipment over rough terrain for long periods of time.
  • Demonstrated ability to interpret drawings, blue prints, specifications, and related regulatory codes and requirements.
  • Ability to perform tasks requiring frequent and prolonged exposure to dust, fumes, chemicals, moving parts, noise, and/or extreme outdoor weather conditions or extreme variations of indoor temperatures.
  • Ability to operate a motor vehicle and equipment with a standard transmission.
  • Ability to construct wooden structures or forms needed in the construction of concrete structures.
  • Demonstrated ability to maintain proper attendance and punctuality standards.
  • Ability to finish concrete.
  • Ability to lay brick, block, stone, and do other masonry work.
  • Ability to construct forms using lumber or steel materials.

  • Ability to operate equipment on rough, steep terrain for long periods of time.
