We have an exciting opportunity for a mechanical engineer, focused on assembly process automation, to join our team. This is a hands-on design role where you'll work with your team to relentlessly explore and provide new processes, tools, and technologies that make Leupold the worlds' choice for sporting optics.
The Manufacturing Development Engineering (MDE) organization provides several key functions in support of both New Product Development (NPD) and Production Manufacturing. At its core, the MDE team is the engine for driving manufacturing technology and innovation. Within the MDE organization is a specialized team supporting automation. The Automation Engineering team's mission is to guide the adoption and implementation of existing and new technologies aligning with the company product roadmap. These technologies solve problems and challenges that are unique to Leupold. As a member of this team, you'll collaborate heavily with the larger NPD engineering organization consisting of Design, Optics, and Electronics groups to develop new manufacturing technologies and solve unique automation challenges.

What You'll Be Doing as a Mechanical Engineer - Process Automation:


  • Joining a new team supporting the rapid development of a number of new product families in a new facility, growing Leupold's command over new market segments through these new product introductions
  • Collaborating with optical engineers, design engineers, software engineers, automation specialists, and manufacturing specialists to ensure seamless integration of mechanical systems
  • Working as a lead mechanical engineer to guide the architecture and design of new automated tools and cells to realize our product manufacturing vision with process & cost efficiency capture
  • Designing automated machinery, including frames and structures, optical elements, motion, robotics integration, pneumatics, gluing, and precision fixturing
  • Supporting prototyping activities and with future production line automation in mind while validating design concepts
  • Working with internal tooling engineers and tool makers
  • Maintaining close communication with internal stakeholders on product performance requirements to bring a balanced approach to automation in the assembly & production steps which offer the highest value & economic return
  • Staying current with industry trends and new technologies related to automated manufacturing tools and systems
  • Participating in process validation of automated systems with cross functional team
  • Working in a fast-paced environment
  • Evaluates machinery and manufacturing capital requirements, establishes financial impact and performs cost justification to ensure cost effectiveness of new equipment
  • Interacts with suppliers, vendors, consultants, and contract engineers to obtain services or support



Skills and Experience You'll Need as a Mechanical Engineer - Process Automation:


  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or similar and 5+ years of experience in mechanical engineering and design, with a focus on automated manufacturing. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered
  • Experience designing automated manufacturing cells
  • Experience with alignment of optics, robotics, pick and place, nesting, end effectors, machine vision, automated glue dispensing, small part feeding, screw driving, rotary tables, conveyors, or part fixturing preferred
  • Knowledge of mechanical design engineering concepts, principles and techniques
  • Strong skills in GD&T and 3D CAD modeling (preferably using SolidWorks or similar software)
  • Knowledge of Python, PLCs, or other programming languages are a plus
  • Strong analytical background and ability to interpret data
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Communicate effectively with technical and non-technical stakeholders
  • Capacity to effectively communicate intricate ideas to others and willingness to listen and learn from others
  • Knowledge of hunting and shooting sports is a plus!



Work Environment for a Mechanical Engineer - Process Automation:
Work takes place in an office environment with exposure to manufacturing processes/areas. Occasional travel may be required.
