Position Description:

The Advanced Practice Provider (APP) works as a member of a multidisciplinary health care team who will contribute to excellence in program administration, patient care, patient safety, research, quality improvement, and teaching.

The Department of Medicine - Division of Gastroenterology is seeking a Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant to support a multidisciplinary health care team, providing a broad range of diagnostic and therapeutic services for the patients of the General GI Outpatient services located in Milwaukee, Wisconsin at Froedtert Hospital.

The APP will be expected to work in a shared practice model with one or more faculty members, as well as independently. The APP will be responsible for new and follow-up visits, in-basket management, TPN management and evaluating other acute patient issues.

Primary Function/Responsibility

  • Collaborates with interdisciplinary health care teams in diagnosis and treatment of conditions requiring medical intervention in outpatient environment as a member of the gastroenterology team.
  • Writes accurate and timely progress notes, procedure notes, and/or admission and transfer orders.
  • Order, perform, and interpret screening and diagnostic procedures and tests, and appropriately communicates and documents information.
  • Privileged to perform procedures beyond core as identified by the gastroenterology and hepatology services.
  • Facilitates and communicates with patient, family and staff to promote continuity of care across the continuum of care.
  • Attend required training and meets key regulatory requirements, including those of the privileging institution, CMS, and the Join Commission.
  • Evaluates quality outcomes for the patients receiving care of this team through participation in the development of quality indicators and outcomes dashboard.
  • Acquires information on the most current development and trends in the Physician Assistant field and/or Nurse Practitioner field, through educational programs, in-services, professional associates, and current literature

Core Responsibilities

  • Performs comprehensive histories and physical exams, identifies normal and abnormal findings, including physical, cognitive and psychosocial status.
  • Order, perform, and interpret screening and diagnostic procedures and tests, and appropriately communicates and documents information
  • Develops pharmaceutical and non-pharmaceutical treatment plans.
  • Monitors effectiveness of plan of care.
  • Educates patients on disease and treatment plans.
  • Performs procedures as trained and appropriately credentialed.
  • Documents within the Electronic Medical Record (EMR) and completes other necessary documents.
  • Collaborates and/or consults with physicians and other health care providers as appropriate.
  • Educates, counsels, and assists patients and families regarding current health problems, health maintenance activities and preventive behaviors

Preferred Schedule:




Monday through Friday core business hours. Scheduling flexibility required to provide for an appropriate level of patient care coverage.



Position Requirements:

Minimum Education:

Advanced Practice Nurse: Master's Degree or higher in Nursing
Physician Assistant: Bachelor's Degree or higher in Physician Assistant Studies

Wisconsin Advanced Practice Nurse Prescriber License
Adult Care or Acute Care
AHA ACLS, AHA BLS, DEA

Preferred Experience:

Experience with gastroenterology patients in an ambulatory setting
