Job Description
Position Overview Perform skilled work on a journey level in the application of paints, coatings, and coverings to surfaces. All work is subject to spot-checking and inspection for neatness and efficiency. Functional contacts include co-workers, other service department employees and other University staff and students. Key Responsibilities:
- Evaluate area to be painted and determine type of paint to be used, steps and types of surface preparation, equipment needed and any environmental health procedures required
- Prepare area and surface to be painted; move furniture and wall fixtures from painting area, cover floor and furniture for protection, set up and work from ladders, scaffolding, and staging Preparation may include filling of holes, cracks, joints, and grains, sandblasting, mechanical chipping or grinding, and burning
- Apply paints and coatings with brush, roller, spray, squeegee, or appropriate applicator; may apply wallpaper or fabric. Select pre-mixed materials or prepare materials to match specified colors, textures, consistencies, and drying properties by mixing. Make suggestions regarding paint color, quality, cost and plans and procedures
- Clean area upon completion of painting; return materials and equipment and restore area to original state
- May paint signs, cut stencils, etch surfaces, mark parking lot lines and curbs
- May perform or assist with preparation of cost estimates, material orders, reports and maintenance of records
- Perform other duties as assigned
Shift
Mid-May to Mid-August 8:00am-4:30pm, Monday-Friday
Minimum Qualifications
- A high school diploma or a combination of education and experience from which comparable knowledge and abilities can be acquired is necessary
- Four years actual work experience and training including the equivalent of apprenticeship or vocational training in the trade (e.g. painting and wall covering) is required
- Depending on the location of the position, some jobs may require two years of journey level experience, including apprentice or vocational training, installing vinyl wall covering
- Knowledge and skill in the maintenance and use of tools, equipment and materials of the trade
- Ability to read blueprints, plans, drawings and plumbing and electrical codes is required
- Ability on a daily basis to:
- Grasp various building tools, paint brushes (of all sizes), compressed air gun and aerosol containers
- Perform repetitive motions with hand equipment items
- Grasp, lift, carry and set down moderate to heavy objects (25-75 lbs.)
- Climb and work from ladders, stairs and/or scaffolding
- Visually evaluate surface of painting project, paint texture and color quality and completion of painting project
- Depending on nature of work performed, may be required to wear a respirator or self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA) as outlined in the "Industrial Standard for Respirator Use"
- Good physical health and coordination; sufficient strength to perform some heavy lifting and ability to work on ladders, scaffolding, and staging
Anticipated Hiring Range
The anticipated hiring range for this position has been established as $18.00-$22.00 hourly. Salary is determined by a variety of factors, including but not limited to, the individual's particular combination of education, skills, and experience, as well as organizational requirements.
