JOB SUMMARY SEIU 73 The Cardiac Sonographer II performs transthoracic echocardiograms (TTE), obtains images for transesophageal (TEE) and stress echocardiograms, and prepares patient records for review and interpretation by the physician in accordance with (IAC) accreditation and national standards. The Cardiac Sonographer II is responsible for quality improvement, scholarly, and educational activities, as assigned, such as but not limited to maintaining IAC accreditation standards and documentation, implementing and maintaining quality improvement measures, participating in scholarly and research activities and educating other Sonographers. Typical Duties
- Leads quality improvement projects, as assigned, and assists in implementing quality standards with the aim of continual improvement of efficiency and quality of services provided.
- Mentors Cardiac Sonographer I and assists in the education and training of Sonographers, students, and staff, as assigned.
- Participates in scholarly and divisional research activities.
- Provides interpreting physician through the noninvasive diagnostic imaging techniques of echocardiography, a complete and accurate documentation of cardiac anatomy and cardiac performance for adult patients.
- Performs routine and complex cardiovascular diagnostic studies such as stress testing, tilt table, and Holter monitoring as requested by physician and in accordance with standard practices.
- Performs routine, complex, and emergency echocardiograms, including but not limited to 2D and 3D transthoracic echocardiograms, stress (exercise and dobutamine) echocardiograms, and transesophageal echocardiograms, as requested by physician and in accordance with standard practices.
- Acquires measurements and performs tracings of Doppler signals in order to aid the physician in interpretation of echocardiographic images.
- Produces work in an efficient manner that meets divisional productivity standards.
- Administers IV contrast and agitated saline as needed for echocardiographic studies.
- Inserts and removes IV line for IV contrast and agitated saline administration, after undergoing adequate on the job training.
- Analyzes patient's medical records to obtain history of symptoms and necessary information for performance of diagnostic procedures.
- Prepares patient records for review and interpretation by physician, including the selection, recording, cross-referencing of significant or representative studies.
- Maintains confidentiality of patients and employees.
- Maintains appropriate logs, files, and records.
- Works in accordance with and maintains IAC accreditation standards in the echocardiography
- laboratory.
- Maintains equipment in working order, making minor adjustments and repairs, performing routine cleaning and preventative maintenance, reports equipment malfunction to department supervisor.
- Maintains all necessary supplies (orders and stocks).
- Performs as a member of the cardiac arrest team; assists in emergency situations by initiating and/or assisting in emergency procedures prescribed by hospital policies.
- Works overtime when the workload and/or patient scheduling require extended hours of operation.
- Demonstrates compliance with institutional, regulatory, and legal requirements.
- Carries a pager during business hours and takes call for STAT or emergency studies after hours including nights, weekends and holidays, on a rotation-basis, for a rate set according to the CBA agreement.
- Covers diagnostic cardiac testing at other CCHHS sites when necessary.
- Performs other related duties within the realm of diagnostic cardiac testing, as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
- High School Diploma or GED equivalent (Must provide proof at time of interview)
- Graduate of an accredited program for echocardiography/cardiac ultrasound program with Two (2) years of experience as a full-time Cardiac Sonographer OR Five (5) years of experience as a full-time Cardiac Sonographer ((Must provide proof at time of interview)
- Must possess one (1) of the following credentials: o Registered Diagnostic Cardiac Sonographer (RDCS) credential in Adult Echocardiography (AE) from the American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonography (ARDMS) ((Must provide proof at time of interview)
- Registered Cardiac Sonographer (RCS) credential from Cardiovascular Credentialing International (CCI)
- Advanced Cardiac Sonographer (ACS) credential from CCI
- Must be able to travel to work sites throughout CCHHS, when needed
- Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification ((Must provide proof at time of interview)
Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Other Characteristics
- Knowledge of 3D TTE and TEE acquisition, strain, stress (dobutamine and exercise) echocardiograms, transesophageal echocardiograms, tilt table, Holter monitoring, and stress testing.
- Ability to make patient care decisions in accordance with level of training and experience, and with applicable hospital policies and procedures.
- Ability to communicate effectively with others on technical and other matters.
- Good attention to detail and ability to prepare and deliver accurate and informative written and verbal reports as necessary.
- Ability to follow written and verbal instruction from other staff and supervisors, as well as read and accurately interpret written procedures included in department manuals and professional literature.
- Demonstrates sensitivity and respect in caring for patients and in dealing with clients of diverse backgrounds.
