Job Summary SEIU-73

The Cardiac Catheterization and Electrophysiology Technologist understands the anatomy, physiology, and electrical system of the heart and their associated disease states. Responsible for performing techniques of obtaining good quality fluoroscopic and cine X-ray imaging of the cardiovascular system as well as the electrophysiology recordings and pacing of the heart. Recognizes and detects the cause of problems in the event of technical malfunctions in the systems used in the Cardiac Catheterization and Electrophysiology Laboratories. Operates and maintains equipment in angiography and electrophysiology suite. Exercises a high degree of professional discretion and judgment.

Typical Duties



  • Inputs and retrieves patient data.
  • Prepares and analyzes specialized reports.
  • Assists in ensuring the safety and regulatory compliance of the unit.
  • Maintains all necessary supplies (ordering and stocking).
  • Performs as a member of the cardiac arrest team; assists in emergency situations by initiating and/or assisting in emergency procedures prescribed by hospital policies and laboratory procedures.
  • Maintains on-call rotation for emergencies and must report physically to the laboratory within thirty (30) minutes from emergency call activation.
  • Assures compliance with regulatory and legal requirements.
  • Scrubs, drapes, and prepares patients and rooms for all types of procedures.
  • Operates, maintains, and cleans fluoroscopy, cine X-Ray, electrophysiology (EP) and all other equipment used in the laboratory or hybrid Operating Room (OR) used for cardiac cases.
  • Operates, maintains, and cleans all hemodynamic equipment in the cardiac catheterization lab or hybrid OR including but not limited to Intra-aortic balloon pumps, Impellas, Extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO).
  • Ensures study order is correctly placed and active in radiologic and hemodynamic systems.
  • Participates in universal time out.
  • Follows prescribed techniques in administering general and specific X rays, moving and adjusting equipment and positioning patients as well as adjusting lead shields and collimators.
  • Transfers patients to and from pre-procedure and recovery areas.
  • Ensures imaging, hemodynamic, and billing data is transferred after every case.
  • Performs periodic quality control checks on all equipment.
  • Performs and assists in vascular sheath removal in the holding area.
  • Must be able to work extended hours in case of emergency procedures and rotate on-call coverage.
  • Must be able to perform independently and proficiently in complex diagnostic and interventional coronary, vascular, and structural heart disease procedures.
  • Must be able to participate in electrophysiology procedures, such as recording, pacing, measuring, and ablating.
  • Performs the duties of Cardiac Catheterization and Electrophysiology Technologist in cardiac and vascular procedures performed outside the Cardiac Catheterization/EP Lab, such as the Hybrid OR.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications




  • Associate degree or higher from an accredited college, university, or foreign equivalent (Must provide official transcripts at time of interview) with One (1) years of experience in a Cardiac Catheterization or Angiography, i.e., Interventional Radiology is required




OR

Bachelor's degree from an accredited college, university, or foreign equivalent with prior experience in a Cardiac Catheterization or Angiography, i.e., Interventional Radiology (Must provide official transcripts at time of interview)




  • Accreditation in Medical Radiation Technology by the Illinois Emergency Management Agency (IEMA) is required. (Must provide proof at time of interview)



  • Valid Basic Life Support (BLS) certification is required. (Must provide proof at time of interview)



  • Accredited by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) in Radiography (R) is required. (Must provide proof at time of interview)



  • Experience and familiarity working with invasive cardiac laboratory equipment, which may include electrophysiology systems is required.





Preferred Qualifications




  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited college, university, or foreign equivalent is preferred (Must provide official transcripts at time of interview)



  • Two (2) years of experience in electrophysiology as a technologist in electrophysiology laboratory or in interrogating and programming implantable electrophysiology devices preferred.





  • Certified by ARRT credential in Cardiac Interventional Radiography (CI) preferred. (Must provide proof at time of interview)



  • Certified as a Registered Cardiovascular Invasive Specialist (RCIS) by the Cardiovascular Credentialing International (CCI) preferred (Must provide proof at time of interview)



  • Valid Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) certification preferred (Must provide proof at time of interview)





Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Other Characteristics



  • Knowledge of cardiac anatomy and physiology, i.e., ability to recognize electrical events such as rhythms, sinus, premature ventricular, atrial contractions, nonspecific ST-T waves, PR and QRS intervals, ability to recognize valve area, shunts, chambers and arteries
  • Knowledge of the principles and techniques of catheterization/angioplasty procedures
  • Knowledge in calibration, operating cine controls, and physiological monitors

Physical and Environmental Demands

This position is functioning within a healthcare environment. The incumbent is responsible for adherence to all hospital and department specific safety requirements. This includes but is not limited to the following policies and procedures: complying with Personal Protective Equipment requirements, hand washing and sanitizing practices, complying with department specific engineering and work practice controls and any other work area safety precautions as specified by hospital wide policy and departmental procedures.
