DESCRIPTION OF WORK

The student will collaborate closely with the Automotive Equipment Foreman to acquire essential skills for safe and effective operation within an automotive garage environment. This hands-on experience will encompass learning fundamental techniques for general repairs and maintenance of cars and light trucks. The student will assist in or carry out a variety of repair and maintenance tasks, utilizing power, hand, and air tools once proficiency is established. Additionally, the student will be responsible for maintaining cleanliness and servicing the work area, tools, and equipment. It is encouraged to seek clarification on any uncertainties or new challenges encountered, while consistently practicing and adhering to safety protocols.

The training will cover a broad spectrum of general repair and preventative maintenance knowledge, including oil changes, tire replacements, brake inspections and replacements, exhaust system evaluations, suspension repairs, and air conditioning diagnostics and repairs. The student will also learn to document repairs accurately, comprehend work orders, and handle tools and equipment properly, including their care and storage. Emphasis will be placed on safety, ensuring that the student observes and practices safety skills consistently in the automotive garage setting, including procedures for hazardous equipment and materials. Furthermore, the development of soft skills such as punctuality, responsibility, accountability, and the completion of time sheets will be integral to the training. The student may also assist more experienced tradespeople with complex repairs, such as engine rebuilds, heating and cooling systems, transmissions, clutches, brake systems, and hydraulic systems, as well as routine body repair work. There may be an expectation for the student to travel to various work sites and facilities, participating in field activities both within the District and across the state. If the student is a minor, the student will be driven by the supervisor or staff member for any travel within the workday.
Work Schedule and Additional Information:

  • If you are selected for this position, you will work directly with your workplace supervisor to determine a work schedule that coordinates with your school schedule.
  • Internship will run through June 30, 2026
  • Telework: You will not have the option to telework in this position.

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE, TRAINING & ELIGIBILITY

QUALIFICATIONS

Internship Requirements:

  • You must be at least 16 years of age.
  • You must be a sophomore or junior enrolled in High School during the 2024- 25 school year.

Additional Requirements:

  • Letter of Recommendation: You must attach a Letter of Recommendation from your school's co-op coordinator, career or guidance counselor, or similar designated school professional indicating you meet your school's requirements and are being recommended for this opportunity.
  • Work Permit: Minors will be required to submit their Work Permit upon acceptance of this position.
  • By participating in this program, the student and school agree to use the Commonwealth's Training Plan, Statement of Responsibilities, and Student Performance Evaluation. Forms will be provided to the student upon acceptance of this position.
  • You must be able to perform essential job functions.
