WDTS Program - Summer 2025 Term

If you have not previously applied to the Workforce Development for Teachers and Scientist (WDTS) Program and been selected by the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) Lab Education Director (LED) please visit https://science.osti.gov/wdts to learn more about the WDTS Program.

The mission of WDTS is to help ensure that Department of Energy (DOE) and the Nation have a sustained pipeline of highly skilled and diverse science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) workers. This is accomplished partly by support of undergraduate internships and faculty programs.

The DOE and Office of Science encourages undergraduate students and for students who have received their Bachelor's degree and have not begun graduate studies to pursue STEM careers by providing research experiences at the DOE National Laboratories.Selected faculty and students perform research, under the guidance of laboratory staff scientists or engineers, on projects related to ongoing programs.

This includes the following programs:

  • Community College Internship (CCI)
  • Science Undergraduate Laboratory Internship (SULI)

In this roleyou will

  • Complete the full 10-16 week program (based on term).
  • Under close supervision, you will participate in research in assigned area.
  • Complete the entrance and exit surveys through the online system provided at the beginning and the end of the internship.
  • Make an oral or poster presentation on the outcome of their research activities.
  • Complete and submit a research project report.
  • Submit an abstract of their research in the required format.
  • Submit a one-page peer review of another intern's talk or poster. (SULI interns only)
  • Attend all scheduled events including lectures, tours and group activities.
  • Students should expect to spend approximately 40 hours a week working on their research projects or participating in the provided professional development opportunities
  • Perform other duties as assigned

  • Notification of acceptance into one of the Office of Science Workforce Development for Teachers and Scientists (WDTS) programs.
  • Selection by LLNL LED

Security Clearance

None required.However, if your assignment is longer than 179 days cumulatively within a calendar year, you must go through the Personal Identity Verification process. This process includes completing an online background investigation form and receiving approval of the background check. (This process does not apply to foreign nationals.)

National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA)

The 2025 National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA), Section 3112, generally prohibits citizens of China, Russia, Iran and North Korea without dual US citizenship or legal permanent residence from accessing specific non-public areas of national security or nuclear weapons facilities. The restrictions of NDAA Section 3112 apply to this position. To be qualified for this position, Candidates must be eligible to access the Laboratory in compliance with Section 3112.

Pre-Employment Drug Test

Depending on your job duties, you may be required to work in a Limited Area whereyou are not permitted to have a personal and/or laboratory mobile devicein your possession. This includes, but not limited to cell phones, tablets, fitness devices, wireless headphones, and other Bluetooth/wireless enabled devices.

Ifyou useamedical device, whichpairs with a mobile device,you must still follow the rules concerningthe mobile device in individual sections within Limited Areas. Sensitive Compartmented Information Facilities requireseparate approval. Hearing aids without wireless capabilities or wireless that has been disabled are allowed in Limited Areas, Secure Space and Transit/Buffer Space within buildings.
