Position Summary
The objectives of this position are to facilitate university-industry collaboration, and to attract private, corporate, and foundation support for academic and research programs in Computing, Data Science and Artificial Intelligence. The position will be based in the Franklin College of Arts and Sciences and aims to cultivate long-term, holistic partnerships with individuals, organizations, and companies by aligning college resources with business goals to help expand mutually positive impact.
The Associate Director for Business Engagement will foster new, significant, long-term partnerships with individuals, industry and industry-connected philanthropic foundations. This position will work externally with individuals and industry representatives to identify meaningful opportunities for corporate, foundation, and philanthropic investment, support, and collaboration, while maintaining strong internal relationships with university faculty, staff, and administrators. The Associate Director also acts as an initial point of contact for companies seeking to establish a partnership with programs in Computing, Data Science and Artificial Intelligence, and will actively and continually scan the business community to identify new leads for corporate partnership, collaboration, and investment. The Associate Director for Business and Donor Engagement dual reports to the Senior Director of Development and the Associate Dean for Research, Scholarship and Partnership. This position will also liaise with the UGA Office of Business Engagement as well as other central offices and departments as needed.

5-7 years of professional experience, preferably in a role(s) that focused on philanthropy, research & development, sales, business development, or economic development.

Relationship Management and Business Development for Computing, Data Science and Artificial Intelligence

  • Identify and qualify new industry prospect leads for Computing, Data Science and Artificial Intelligence, with a priority focus on businesses and industries in the state of Georgia.
  • Maintain a strong focus on securing leadership and major gifts.
  • Manage a growing portfolio of major industry prospects with the goal of building long-term, mutually beneficial partnerships that generate philanthropic support, research sponsorship, and student engagement.
  • Develop a broad understanding of philanthropic areas for support in these disciplines, areas of research expertise, instructional programs, and student activities that have potential connectivity to industry. With that understanding, the associate director will identify, research, and cultivate new corporate prospects, working to match departmental need with overarching business objectives to create new mutually beneficial relationships.
  • Assist and advise faculty, administrators, and unit development directors on industry-related projects and programs by making company introductions and assisting where needed on funding proposals, business contracts, research agreements, philanthropic solicitations, and stewardship reports.
  • Plan and attend meetings on campus and off-site with corporate representatives to build and maintain university-industry partnerships.
  • Create annual prospect engagement plans that drive mission-focused, tangible results and take steps towards meeting annual fundraising and engagement metrics.
  • Document all work-related interactions with industry and faculty in the customer relationship management (CRM) system, GAIL. Maintain clear, concise, and proper documentation via quantitative and qualitative data input.

Duties/Responsibilities
Collaboration

  • Recruit and manage an Industry Advisory Board to help the college achieve its goals by garnering guidance and expertise from industry professionals while deepening industry engagement across the college with focus in Computing, Data Science and Artificial Intelligence.
  • Collaborate with university colleagues on projects and programs that involve industry partners that fall within this portfolio.
  • Consult with industry-funded faculty on project management practices, relevant university processes and policies, and industry expectations and priorities.
  • Meet regularly with identified faculty to learn current research and brainstorm and collaborate on new areas of priority.
  • Liaise with cross campus partners, such as the Office of Business Engagement, to identify new leads for industry partnership as well as opportunities for cultivation and stewardship of existing industry partners.
  • Participate and support staff meetings, division meetings, and office events and activities.
  • Represent and grow relationships in the business community by attending association networking functions, obtaining membership to relevant business associations, etc.
