Job Summary: The purpose of the Lead Controls Engineer is to provide technical expertise for plant Process Control designs, specifications, installation, repairs, operations and code compliance in Project Engineering and Execution for Messer in the Americas.

This position will primarily provide value to the organization by executing deliverables for project engineers/managers on active projects. This includes providing network architecture as well as hardware and software design/cost bases to proposal and project managers to the necessary level of detail leveraging 3rd party resources where possible.

This position will also actively work on specifications and standards, and interfacing with other engineering disciplines as required to successfully meet project targets, and develop/mentor junior engineers in their discipline.

Principal Responsibilities:



  • Supports Project Execution in achieving positive outcomes in safety, reliability, efficiency, cost, and customer service.
  • Ensures compliance with all safety, health, environmental and quality standards and fosters a culture of safety during the execution of all aspects of the role.
  • Provides technical, troubleshooting and maintenance support to all ASU, CO2, H2, and HE plants for all controls and measurement systems, including Remote Operations, Plant Auto Start, Supervisory and LMPC Control, Operations Portal, Expert Systems, Metering and Monitoring Systems, Automated data collection, Pipeline Demand Management, Automated Trailer Fill, and the security of the controls network.
  • Oversight of equipment vendors and OEM's:

    • Ability to follow project from the initial specification through design and manufacture, construction and installation, commissioning and resolution of field issues
    • Provide detailed drawing review and feedback
    • Critical Supplier Audits
    • Factory Acceptance Testing (FAT)
    • Participation in HAZOPs and risk assessments as a technical contributor
    • Develop, plan and implement QA/QC plans relating to Process Controls equipment and installation


  • Ensures the reliable and efficient operation of all controls and measurement systems by:

    • Representing the needs of the Project Execution team, interact with Area Operations and Reliability Teams with Controls related troubleshooting or engineering assistance.
    • Providing Scope Definition, Engineering and Programming for Capital and Re-Life projects in support of the supply chain performance objectives and Growth initiatives.


  • Define critical controls and measurement system spare parts for capital projects.
  • Supervise and assess the technical competency of controls and measurement system contractors and service providers to ensure proper scope is assigned and the expected quality is received with a focus on accurate scope completion, proper documentation control, and standards compliance.
  • Identify, define, estimate, develop, and execute controls and measurement system turnaround maintenance activities including major software updates, new IO and Loop programming, network maintenance, hardware replacements and upgrades, and HMI changes.
  • Support Operations Engineering Management of Change (EMOC),' for completeness and consistency with technical standards and good engineering practice.
  • Works with the Remote Operations Control Center to execute controls and measurement systems projects and initiatives identified to drive performance and close performance gaps.
  • Develops and delivers technical controls and measurement system training for the area.
  • Contribute to maintenance and improvement of Standards, Chapters, and PM content relating to Control systems
  • Provide mentoring, direction, and professional development for control Engineers in the Area
  • Demonstrates continuous improvement by sharing best practices employed and adopt best practices identified by peers


Required Skills:



  • Demonstrated exceptional operational safety leadership


  • Self-started and self-directed with ability to manage multiple activities at once and achieve results with minimal supervision


  • Excellent leadership skills with the ability to lead and educate coworkers on controls and measurement system troubleshooting, logic interpretation, and best practices


  • Proven experience in the installation, maintenance and troubleshooting of controls and measurement systems
  • Experience with industrial communication protocols, computer networking, and security hardening of systems
  • Proven understanding of regulatory and industry standards and codes


  • Strong technical knowledge and experience with DCS, PLC, HMI and computer networking required.

  • Must be willing to travel (25-40% of time) or as business requires.



Basic Qualifications:



  • Bachelor's Degree in engineering required


  • Minimum of 7-15 years relevant experience with Process Controls engineering including design, installation, testing and commissioning in industrial and chemical process plants.



Preferred Qualifications:



  • Experience with Industrial Gases or petrochemical projects preferred
  • General expertise in instrumentation and analyzers preferred
  • Ability to speak, read and write any of the following languages are a plus

    1. German
    2. Chinese (Mandarin)
    3. Spanish
    4. French
