The Facilities & Operations (F&O) Directorate's mission is to support the science and technology and environmental restoration missions of the laboratory by providing a safe, environmentally sound, and reliable infrastructure. To provide high quality crafts and fabrication services to our customers as needed and to protect people, property, and national security. The Guest Services Division provides services that support and assist the world-class scientific research performed at Brookhaven National Laboratory. Our services are available to all Brookhaven Departments, Divisions, guests, users, and visiting researchers.

Brookhaven National Laboratory's Facilities & Operations (F&O) Directorate seeks a Custodian for the Laboratory living quarters. This position reports to the Residence Services Supervisor.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Under general supervision, performs general cleaning and housekeeping duties in Housing facilities
  • Must be available for the entire duration of the position, from May 19th, 2025 to August 15th, 2025
  • The hours of operation/shift for this position are 8:00am - 4:30pm

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Requires one year of custodial/housekeeping experience or equivalent professional cleaning experience.
  • Must be flexible and customer oriented.
  • Must be able to read and comprehend OSHA Material Safety Data Sheets and other job-related documents.
  • Must have a valid driver's license and the ability to pass computer-based training.

Other Requirements

  • Must meet the medical requirements of the "Job Assessment Form".
  • Must have a telephone and must provide the number to BNL for callout and contact purposes.
  • Must possess written and verbal skills.
  • Must be able to communicate verbally with customers, fellow workers, and supervisors.
  • Must be capable of following written instruction procedures, work orders and similar documents.
  • Must possess the written skills to sufficiently complete work orders and other required documents.
  • Must be able to complete all the requirements of the Job Training Assessment.
  • This position is part of a bargaining unit. The successful applicant will be required to join IBEW Local 2230 and maintain membership within 30 days of their start date.
  • Term period may be extended based on business needs and management discretion.

Environmental, Health and Safety Requirements

  • Standing, bending, and lifting
  • Moderate lifting < 30 lbs.
  • Ability to climb portable ladders
  • Working in warm environments
  • Physical coordination dexterity and balance
  • Use of powered operated hand tools
  • Ability to wear proper PPE such as safety glasses, shoes, and hearing protection

The Lab's placement policy is to select the best qualified candidate for an available position. With respect to Bargaining Unit positions, candidates are considered in the following order: (1) present benefits-eligible employees within the department/division and/or appropriate bargaining unit, with preference for those within the immediate work group; (2) present benefits-eligible employees within the Laboratory; and (3) outside applicants. The salary per hour for this role is $24.46
