Job Summary

The anticipated duration of this temporary assignment is approximately 6 months. This is a hybrid role with mostly remote work. Will include optional medical benefits, holiday pay, sick leave accrual and vacation accrual.

The HR Generalist 2 will collaborate with client departments to address their Human Resources needs, providing prompt responses, identifying challenges, assisting with the resolution of routine issues, and analyzing moderately complex situations to propose effective solutions. This role will involve coordination with schools, business units, and specialty centers to ensure the delivery of efficient and high-quality personnel services, while maintaining strict compliance with UCSF policies and procedures.

The HR Generalist 2 will be accountable for upholding high customer service standards, adhering to service level agreements, and meeting related performance metrics. This role requires discretion, tact, and a commitment to maintaining confidentiality in all aspects of the work.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Support the onboarding of over 600 Residents and Clinical Fellows and 400 Graduate Student Researchers
  • Review various HR requests, analyzing and processing as appropriate
  • Coordinate visa/immigration processes with the UC International Scholars Office and candidates
  • Assist Academic Generalists with HR tasks as needed
  • Support other related duties as assigned
  • Serve employee populations including Academics, Residents and Clinical Fellows, Postdoctoral Scholars, and Graduate Student Researchers
  • Other duties as assigned.

Department Description

UCSF's Temporary Employment Program (TEP) recruits and hires temporary employees for immediate clerical and technical support services to UCSF Departments and various off-campus locations. UCSF departments deploy temporary employees to work on special projects, fill in for regular employees who are on vacation or leave, or to temporarily fill a vacant position during recruitment. Frequently temporary employees become successful candidates for career and limited appointment positions.

Required Qualifications


  • Bachelor's degree in related area and/or equivalent experience/training
  • Requires working knowledge of and ability to analyze and apply system-wide and campus policies and procedures which govern academics and/or postdocs, including the APM, collective bargaining agreements, as well as Staff Policies and Guidelines
  • Experience with HR onboarding and employment paperwork verification
  • Possesses analytical and critical thinking skills to conduct analyses and develop recommendations, demonstrating organizational and problem-solving skills
  • Understands campus goals, priorities, and values and the legal and human implications of decisions
  • Has ability to analyze moderately complex issues, make recommendations, and advise clients on personnel issues and actions
  • Ability to acquire knowledge of campus policies and procedures, functional areas associated with AP/HR administration, and how work may impact other areas
  • Knows or has ability to learn business software programs and systems
  • Attention to detail; proficient in communicating clearly and effectively verbally and in writing, and in integrating information in the completion of assignments
  • Demonstrates skill in prioritizing competing work assignments, employing political acumen, and integrating information to determine appropriate courses of action and their implications
  • Ability to handle difficult situations/individuals effectively and escalate appropriately/as needed
  • Serves as primary contact for visa processing and coordinates all visa-related actions for all or a subset of academic appointees in client departments as assigned
  • Ability to provide support to departments in administering policies and programs in the areas of visa applications/processing
  • Ability to partner well with other shared services teams, HR Specialty units, UCSF International Students and Scholars Office (ISSO) to perform visa processing on behalf of clients
  • Ability to acquire strong knowledge in visa policy and procedures; interprets policy in cases where precedent exists; recommends action
  • Ability to recognize and address highly complex or precedent-setting issues in consultation with manager, Service Center director, and other campus experts; handles routine questions and problems
