Johns Hopkins Technology Ventures (JHTV) supports the commercialization of university technology through technology licensing, the development of sponsored research agreements, and venture creation. We serve as business advisors to investigators at all ten schools of the university whose research has commercial potential. Our resources include intellectual property (IP) protection, technology analysis, marketing and licensing support, translational and venture funding support, physical space through our FastForward innovation hubs, and professional services such as mentorship, pro bono legal and accounting services, and educational programming.

We are seeking an Intellectual Property Manager to join our team. Reporting to the Director of Intellectual Property Management, the IP Manager will identify and protect inventions resulting from university research. This role involves managing patent prosecution and disclosure-related tasks through interactions with faculty members, staff, students, and outside counsel.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities

  • Reviews pre-analysis checklists and uses the information provided along with the other disclosure documents to prepare new disclosure summaries including conducting preliminary prior art analysis, if necessary, to identify patentable and commercially valuable subject matter.
  • Evaluates inventions for intellectual property potential and works closely with IP counsel to file for appropriate IP protection, i.e., patent applications, copyrights, trademarks, etc.
  • Works closely with internal staff and groups to generate IP landscapes for invention disclosures to identify market opportunities.
  • Engages in outreach and education related to JHTV's mission, intellectual property and technology transfer practices.
  • Develops IP protection strategies for inventions retained by the university in consultation with licensing staff, inventors and IP counsel. Implements the strategies.
  • Directs patent counsel in the preparation, filing and prosecution of U.S. and international patent applications.
  • Maintains a Computer Packages (CPI) docket for tracking filing obligations for their assigned portfolio.
  • Provides oversight and management of the patent budget for assigned cases.
  • Establishes and maintains contacts with industry IP managers, patent counsel and representatives at other academic institutions.
  • Works with Safesforce and Inteum databases to review IP for encumbrances or other issues before marketing material is sent to potential licensees.

  • Effective communication skills with all levels of the organization and the ability to work in a collaborative team environment.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality.


Minimum Qualifications
  • An advanced Degree in Science, Business or law is required.
  • Candidate will have a working knowledge intellectual property management and patenting that is typically gained through a minimum of 1 year of related intellectual property management experience.


Preferred Qualifications
  • U.S. Citizen or legal permanent resident required due to Federal Export Controls.
  • Registered Patent Agent strongly preferred.
  • Additional experience beyond one year strongly preferred.

The referenced base salary range represents the low and high end of Johns Hopkins University's salary range for this position. Not all candidates will be eligible for the upper end of the salary range. Exact salary will ultimately depend on multiple factors, which may include the successful candidate's geographic location, skills, work experience, market conditions, education/training and other qualifications. Education and Experience Equivalency
Please refer to the job description above to see which forms of equivalency are permitted for this position. If permitted, equivalencies will follow these guidelines: JHU Equivalency Formula: 30 undergraduate degree credits (semester hours) or 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience. Additional related experience may substitute for required education on the same basis. For jobs where equivalency is permitted, up to two years of non-related college course work may be applied towards the total minimum education/experience required for the respective job.
