Departmental Overview

The mission of The Department of Residential Life is to facilitate residential student transitions into the intellectual and social communities of the University of California, Berkeley, and to promote personal well-being and respect for the community needs of all residents. Our residential and apartment communities are built on five intentional learning goals including Academic Success, Community Engagement, Diversity & Global Conscientiousness, Identity Exploration, and Holistic Wellness.

In Residential Life this position is charged with the execution of the programmatic & day-to-day operations for residential students in Isolation/Quarantine at the University of California, Berkeley. Responsible for providing support to the academic mission of the University by contributing to students' out of classroom learning & support. Manages student services for residents using knowledge of learning and student development theory, counsels students and provides support for students during their short term stay in Isolation/Quarantine. Oversees a team of professional staff who work on all annual and one-time departmental projects in Residential Life including but not limited to Cal Day; departmental and interdepartmental appreciation days; key, cell phone, and access inventories and spreadsheets; and other as directed projects. Involves planning, developing and implementing activities and processes for students in their co-curricular life at the university, including residential life, community support & engagement, student conduct, sexual violence & sexual harassment, and other areas.

Responsibilities

Under the direction of the Assistant Director for Residential Life, the Projects Coordinator is charged with managing the residential isolation and quarantine process including space coordination, meal coordination, transport, student support, and coordinating programs and projects related to residential isolation/quarantine policies, procedures, and trainings in collaboration with UHS, EH&S, and RSSP.

Using professional student development theories and concepts provides guidance on the development of an inclusive residential community, sets and executes vision and priorities of key aspects of the Residential Isolation/Quarantine Area, and solves complex and sensitive situations. Recommends and initiates improvements to policies, practices, and procedures of the department. Participates to establish plans and objectives affecting residential student life and development. Independently oversees day-to-day operations, and determines goals and performance expectations of subordinates. Make recommendations concerning improvements of program/function to manager. Oversees a team of professional staff who work on all annual and one-time departmental projects in Residential Life including but not limited to Cal Day; departmental and interdepartmental appreciation days; key, cell phone, and access inventories and spreadsheets; and other as directed projects.

Additionally, the Projects Coordinator will support the Assistant Director of Residential Support and Community Standards with any ongoing projects and needs related critical incident response protocol. They will work closely with the Residential Life Leadership and Management Team and RSSP to ensure coordination of ongoing projects and needs between both areas.

  • Chair the professional staff group working on completing multi-unit collaborative projects and programs designed to achieve specific outcomes and to enhance program effectiveness. This position will collaborate and coordinate the execution of projects as directed by Residential Life in support of the residential experience and residential operations. This position will utilize project management tools to meet goals and ensure continuity of service planning for Residential Life. This position will be responsible for outlining all resources needed by staff working in and with the residential isolation/quarantine area and will coordinate with Facilities, Cal Dining, and UHS partners. This position will serve in departmental and divisional committees as needed.
  • Oversee the Security Monitor (SM) program including the hiring, training, scheduling, and oversight of student staff and student staff supervisors. Assess each individual residential unit's needs in planning for SM presence, training, and implementation of the program. Collaborate with key stakeholders in Residential & Student Service Programs (RSSP), University of California Police Department (UCPD), and Residential Life to ensure that SMs have appropriate training, tools, and resources to ensure residential security by providing SM presence, ensuring all residents tap into the building, checking in guests, and calling Residential Life RAs on Duty for support in managing crises.
  • In partnership with key stakeholders in Residential & Student Service Programs (RSSP), University of Health Services (UHS), Environmental Health & Safety (EH&S), and Residential Life this position will plan for and execute a collaborative team approach to the experience residential students will engage in during any time spent in the residential isolation/quarantine area.
    • This includes: travel (if needed) from the residents current location, checking in to the temporarily assigned space, orienting & clearly communicating expectations of the residential isolation/quarantine area, providing supportive or corrective check in conversations during a residents relocation, and communicating and coordinating the check out process. Supporting residential students during their stay in the residential isolation/quarantine area by coordinating meal distribution, laundry access, lockout support, as well as refer and connect residential students to campus services and supports such as Counseling and Psychological Services or the Center for Support and Intervention (if needed). Coordinate with on-call professional staff to support the manage of the room inventory systems set up to track isolation/quarantine occupancy and support the coordination of space turn over in order to maximize resources.
  • Maintain on-going communication and foster collaboration with staff from Residential Life, RSSP, UHS, EH&S and other campus departments as necessary (e.g., engagement with Housing Facilities regarding cleaning/linen, UHS regarding student transportation, trainings etc.) to ensure an appropriate exchange of information for all aspects of isolation/quarantine including advocating for resource needs.
  • Serve as an expert on risk management for our residential isolation/quarantine area. This person will consult with the Residential Life team and any appropriate partners when assessing crisis situations and provide direction for actions to be taken. Facilitate conversations with students and staff in crisis situations. Assist in the direction of professional staff and ensure reporting of information in a timely and appropriate fashion as outlined by RSCS staff. Follow up with students of concern and provide referral counseling to students and consult with the residential psychologist as needed.
  • Work closely with staff from Residential Life, RSSP, University Health Services, Dean of Students, Student Affairs Safety Officer, UCPD, the Berkeley Fire Department, and the University Fire Marshal to develop, implement and evaluate response to fire, bomb threats, earthquake, and other significant safety issues.
  • Functions as a Campus Security Authority under the Clery Act and under the California Child Abuse and Neglect Act (CANRA) to report observed/suspected abuse or neglect of children, dependent adults and elders to designated law enforcement or social service agencies.
  • Support in coordination of summer residential experience. In collaboration with Summer Sessions, this position will support in planning large scale programming, educational trips, and immersive experiences for Pre-College Scholars.
  • Through the Departmental Projects committee, this position will coordinate large programs and events for all summer residential students. This position will coordinate move in and move out processes for Residential Life in partnership with key stakeholders. Serve as a liaison with Housing Facilities and Conferences for spaces and resources.
Required Qualifications

  • Interpersonal skills and intercultural competence, including a strong understanding of diversity, inclusion and social justice.
  • Demonstrated experience in judgment and decision-making, problem-solving and organizational skills in a student life environment.
  • Skills in monitoring/assessing people, processes or services, to make improvements.
  • Knowledge of risk assessment principles and demonstrated experience in evaluating risks in a student life environment.
  • Knowledge in the areas of counseling and crisis intervention, conflict mediation, student and leadership development theory, student conduct administration, multicultural and educational programming, academic support, and safety and security programs.
  • Bachelors degree in related area and/or equivalent experience/training.
Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's degree in counseling, higher education or student affairs.

This range takes into account the wide range of factors that are considered in making compensation decisions including but not limited to experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, analysis of internal equity, and other business and organizational needs. It is not typical for an individual to be offered a salary at or near the top of the range for a position. Salary offers are determined based on final candidate qualifications and experience.

The budgeted salary range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position is $80,500 - $85,500.

  • This is a 100% full-time (40 hours per week), career position that is eligible for full UC benefits.
  • This position is exempt and paid monthly.
