Purpose

Reporting to the Senior Information Technology Manager, Advancement Data Operations, the Principal Software Engineer is an individual contributor and technical lead of a team of application developers who work closely with stakeholders and user groups in the University Development Office to analyze, develop, test, and deploy web-based applications to support key distributed business processes. This position would be crucial in serving in a leadership role designing and maintaining application integrations workstreams.

Our office utilizes a variety of technologies to deliver tailored business applications for our users. Our custom applications are built against Oracle and ADABAS data stores, Python/Django or Mainframe (ADABAS/NATURAL) backend, and Angular front end. Other technologies and skills in use include, but are not limited to: RabbitMQ, Splunk, VueJS, Mule, Elastic, Netlify, Stonebranch, batch/scheduled processing, data integration, containerization, AWS/Azure, cron and bash scripting.

Responsibilities
  • Provides technical and/or project management leadership on large projects.

  • Designs, codes, tests, integrates, and deploys technical software systems and frameworks that address broad business process needs.

  • Lead code reviews and provide direction, training, and mentorship to more junior staff.

  • Ability to identify, assess, and document functional requirements, workflows, and business rules required to effectively design and build web-based applications, backend data integrations, APIs and more.

  • Develop standards and education for users.

  • Installs, configures, and maintains application servers and libraries that support software development

  • Identify infrastructure needs and develop innovative solutions to effectively maximize resources

  • Designs and develops data schema to support software applications

  • Designs and writes system programs to optimize and/or simplify systems-related tasks and develop and document clear application programming interfaces

  • Research available solutions and integrates them into existing computing environments

  • Collaborate with vendors to design and deploy enterprise solutions

  • Other duties as assigned

Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree.

  • 5+ years of production experience as a full-stack developer/engineer using frameworks such as Angular and Django and automated testing strategies.

  • 3+ years of experience with batch/scheduled processing, developing modern single-page applications and applications against APIs.

  • Demonstrable experience with application and data security.

  • Deep understanding of proper RESTful API design principles.

  • Proficiency working with a SQL database as an application datastore.

  • Understanding of identity and role-based access management.

  • Previous experience with Agile Scrum, modern DevOps practices and exposure to modern deployment environments.

  • Good understanding of source control and versioning tools (Git).

  • Experience operating with substantial latitude for independent decision making.

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.

  • Ability to shift priorities quickly, without losing track of projects, while ensuring project continuity and team alignment.

  • Ability to work collaboratively with a team of application developers, data integration engineers, DBAs, data and business analysts.

  • Aptitude at quickly acquiring business knowledge and translating business needs.

Relevant education and experience may be substituted as appropriate.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Master's degree in related field such as computer science, software engineering, MIS, etc.

  • 2+ years of experience with mainframe development (ADABAS/Natural) preferably at UT Austin

  • Familiarity with campus IT resources, university data, fundraising and development terminology andrelated business processes.

  • Experience with managing a mix of cloud and on-premise resources and working with GraphQL APIs.

  • 3+ years of experience with mainframe development (ADABAS/Natural)

Salary Range

$120,000 + depending on qualifications
