Position Purpose

Serve as Executive Director of the Construction Industry Institute (CII), an Organized Research Unit at The University of Texas at Austin (UT) Cockrell School of Engineering. Responsible for providing strategic direction and leadership of CII and, under the UT Cockrell School of Engineering, managing day-to-day CII operations and implementation of policies approved by the CII Board of Advisors (BOA) and UT.

Responsibilities
  • Perform high-quality leadership of CII while adhering to CII's mission, vision, and core values and UT guidelines and policies

  • Set strategic goals, develop strategies to achieve the goals, implement the strategies, monitor and report progress, and adjust as needed

  • Maintain a high level of industry awareness by staying informed about market trends, and emerging technologies to drive strategic decision-making and innovation

  • Clearly communicate vision and goals to stakeholders to gain support for the organization

  • Establish and maintain excellence as well as policies, protocols, procedures, and research programs to ensure optimum performance

  • Develop, deliver, and continuously improve a broad portfolio of services to CII's membership

  • Provide opportunities for employees to learn and grow, creating a culture of continuous learning to ensure a robust talent pipeline and organizational continuity

  • Work with a variety of internal and external constituents to manage the interests of CII and its staff

  • Oversee CII's budgeting processes working closely with accounting representatives to monitor finances and ensure fiscal responsibility of CII

  • Maintain an effective CII Executive Committee, which provides leadership and direction for all Institute activities

  • Maintain productive relationships with the Process Industry Practices (PIP) organization and CII's UT contacts (i.e., through the UT Faculty Steering Committee for CII)

  • Coordinate initiatives pursued by the standing committees and other CII groups to ensure alignment with CII's goals and create a cohesive portfolio of initiatives

Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in engineering or related field, and 20 years of increasingly responsible results-oriented industry experience in capital planning and construction project planning, leadership, and management on projects of various types, sizes, and complexities

  • Experience with leading teams to develop and steward organizational budgets and reprojections

  • Experience in developing strategic plans; establishing priorities, goals, and key performance indicators; developing organizational budgets and budget reprojections; and ensuring achievement of goals

  • Demonstrated results-oriented approach to work

  • Demonstrated safety, health, and environmental champion

  • Demonstrated exceptional experience leading teams, developing people, and building an organizational culture and climate for success

  • Strong knowledge of current trends, best practices, and emerging technologies in capital planning and construction project leadership, management, and execution

  • Strong analytical, problem solving, and timely decision-making abilities

  • Strong organizational and facilitative leadership skills

  • Superior verbal and written communication

  • Superior presentation and facilitation skills with both small and large groups of participants

  • Established ability to marshal resources to ensure achievement of staffing plans

  • Ability to handle multiple tasks and projects simultaneously

Relevant education and experience may be substituted as appropriate.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Master's Degree in Construction Management, Engineering, or Business with 20 plus total years of professional experience

  • Licensed as a Project Management Professional or Professional Engineer

  • Experience as a CII member company representative leading the company's engagement with CII

  • Familiarity with CII Best Practices and experience with leading implementation of a CII Best Practice

Salary Range

$225,000+ depending on qualifications.

Working Conditions
  • Standard work hours are Monday-Friday 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., with flexible work arrangements considered

  • Periodic work outside of normal business hours, to including evening and weekends, may be required on a periodic basis

  • Regular domestic travel is required, and periodic international travel is expected

Retirement Plan Eligibility:

The retirement plan for this position is Teacher Retirement System of Texas (TRS), subject to the position being at least 20 hours per week and at least 135 days in length. This position has the option to elect the Optional Retirement Program (ORP) instead of TRS, subject to the position being 40 hours per week and at least 135 days in length.
