About the opportunity

SWCA Environmental Consultants is seeking a Cultural Resources Director to lead a team of anthropologists, archaeologists, and architectural historians in our Gulf Coast offices. This leadership role requires strong project execution, business development, and team-building skills to drive growth, ensure quality service, and maintain client satisfaction. The Cultural Resources Director will report to the Senior Cultural Resources Director and play a key role in expanding and strengthening our cultural resources program. This is a full-time, salaried position based in Louisiana or Texas, with required experience in both states and travel as needed to support staff and projects across the region.

The growth of our Gulf Coast offices is critical to SWCA's continued success, requiring a commitment to delivering high-quality cultural resource services. The successful candidate will work closely with office directors and local staff to develop new business opportunities, expand client relationships, and ensure technical excellence. What you will accomplish

People Leadership (30%)

  • Assist the Senior Cultural Resource Director in leading the Gulf Coast Cultural Resources team as an integral part of the leadership team.
  • Foster a culture of collaboration, engagement, and high-quality service in alignment with SWCA's core values.
  • Develop and implement strategies to attract, hire, and retain top talent in the Gulf Coast region.
  • Directly manage principal and lead-level staff, ensuring billable targets are met.
  • Motivate and engage team members through recognition, coaching, and mentorship.
  • Conduct performance reviews, compensation decisions, and career development initiatives.
  • Facilitate team alignment with regional and national business goals.
  • Oversee resource allocation to ensure efficient project execution.

Technical Leadership (40%)

  • Ensure adherence to SWCA's Quality Control Procedures and foster accountability in project execution.
  • Oversee project management and provide senior-level technical support.
  • Stay up to date on regulatory changes and communicate key updates to staff and clients.
  • Ensure implementation of company safety programs.
  • Collaborate with nationwide Cultural Resources Technical Directors and industry groups to advance technical capabilities.

Client & Market Leadership (20%)

  • Expand and maintain client relationships across local and regional markets.
  • Stay informed on industry trends, regulatory changes, and market opportunities.
  • Identify and pursue new business opportunities to diversify SWCA's portfolio.
  • Lead proposal development and go/no-go analyses.
  • Work closely with business development teams to align strategy with operational capabilities.

Financial Leadership (10%)

  • Oversee budget approvals, proposals, and contracts, ensuring financial compliance.
  • Monitor key financial metrics (e.g., productivity, utilization, revenue, and profitability).
  • Conduct regular project audits to assess risk, track performance, and resolve challenges.
  • Facilitate communication between project managers, finance teams, and accounts receivable.

Experience and qualifications for success

  • Graduate degree in anthropology, archaeology, geology, historic preservation, or a related field.
  • 15+ years of experience in cultural resources management, including fieldwork, project oversight, scheduling, and budgeting.
  • 10+ years of increasing management responsibility, including staff supervision and mentorship.
  • Strong knowledge of the Gulf Coast and South cultural resources market and relevant regulations.
  • Expertise in applying NEPA, NHPA, and other federal/state/local cultural resource regulations.
  • Proven track record in business development and client relationship management.
  • Experience working across multiple business lines to successfully deliver projects.
  • Ability to recruit, develop, and retain high-performing staff.
  • Strong financial acumen and understanding of industry financial metrics.
  • Excellent communication, leadership, and problem-solving skills.

An employee in this Houston, TX based position can expect a salary of $121,474.08 to $159,715.92/year. Actual pay within this range may depend on experience, qualifications, geographic location, client requirements where applicable, and other factors permitted by law. Regular-status employees are also eligible for performance bonuses.
