JOB DESCRIPTION AND POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

Penn State Harrisburg seeks a talented undergraduate student to work part-time with awarded library faculty in a stimulating intellectual environment. The Community Impact Student Fellow will be a member of the archives team within Archives and Special Collections at the Madlyn L. Hanes Library.

The Student Fellow will be paid $15 per hour. The wages are supported by the Spring 2025 award of up to $2,250.

Please note that this is a wage position, therefore, the student fellow's tuition, fees, and housing are not covered.

Job Description

Under the direction of the Archivist and Humanities Reference Librarians and in collaboration with graduate student assistants in Archives and Special Collections, the Community Impact Student Fellow will play a key role in completing transcription of oral history interviews of Holocaust survivors, liberators, and witnesses from the Harrisburg area. The collection of interviews exists in both audio and video formats and are part of the repository's Holocaust and Jewish Studies Collection. The project is based upon a partnership with the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington, D.C., and the oral histories are being transcribed using Trint.com software.

Job Duties

* Transcribe first-person, oral history experiences and interviews from reformatted audio and video recordings

* Develop a detailed transcription record for each oral history reviewed

* Plan and/or prepare a related library exhibit, if feasible

No travel is required.

Requirements

* Ability to meticulously focus on capturing all details in audio/video recordings

* Actively listen and accurately capture spoken words, including proper grammar, punctuation, spelling, accents, and nuances in English and in other languages

* Attention to detail and accuracy

* Ability to work both independently and as part of a collaborative team

* Proficiency using Microsoft Office Suite (e.g., Excel, Outlook, Word, and PowerPoint)

* Ability to learn new transcription software

* Commitment to the project's mission and objectives

Preferred Qualifications

* Experience with transcription software/programs, especially Trint.com

* Experience with digital tools used for historical research or storytelling

* Familiarity with oral history methodology and practices

* Basic knowledge of World War Two history

* Basic knowledge of the Holocaust or Holocaust Studies

* Working knowledge of German, Yiddish, Hebrew, or other foreign languages

* Emotional resilience as exemplified by the ability to listen to historical experiences empathetically yet objectively.

Education

* Currently enrolled undergraduate student, preferably with at least one or two semesters completed

* Preferred major in the humanities, such as American Studies, Communications, English, etc.

Work Hours: 10-20 hours per week (Spring Semester 2025)
