Position Overview


Essential Job Duties
The postdoc will develop next-generation visible photonic integrated circuits (vPICs). They will work on the create passive optical devices for integration into a monolithic vPIC platform with a focus on low-loss waveguides, sources, detectors, and modulators. The postdoc will design, fabricate, and characterize these devices.

Duties and Responsibilities include:

  • Conduct simulations of active/passive photonic devices such as waveguides, couplers, meta-lenses constructed of various materials.
  • Be able to conduct performance/tolerance trade-offs for manufacturability and high-temperature environments to meet program goals. (e.g., Lumerical, Zemax). Inverse or AI/ML aided photonic design experience is highly desirable.
  • Fabrication of photonic devices (e.g., lithography, dry/wet etching, wafer-bonding, PECVD, metal
  • sputter/evaporation, lapping/polishing, dicing, etc.).
  • Perform measurements of photonic integrated circuits and be able to automate fiber alignment systems with custom scripts (e.g., Python).
  • Mentor Ph.D., Master, and Undergraduate student researchers.
  • Prepare and/or review manuscripts for publication in high-impact journals and peer-reviewed academic conferences.

Other Work/Responsibilities
Communication of results to the PI, the program sponsor, and in journal articles.
Requirements and Preferences


Work Schedule M-F 40 Hours/Week
Department Required Skills
Knowledge of semiconductor photonic devices, wafer fabrication techniques, device modeling, and device testing and characterization.

PhD with 1 year of experience ( Including PhD Duration)
