HJF is seeking a Research Assistant II to perform research and/or development in collaboration with others for projects. The Research Assistant provides laboratory and technical support to senior technical and professional staff and solves problems of standard complexity in carrying out research projects in a clinical or laboratory environment.

This position will be in support of the B Cell Immunology Section of the US Military HIV Research Program at the Walter Reed Army Institute of Research in Silver Spring MD. The ideal candidate will provide technical laboratory support to senior staff conducting studies on the role of humoral immunity, viral pathogenesis, and vaccine development. Research includes a wide variety of techniques (molecular, biochemical, flow cytometric) for the isolation, purification, and characterization of antibodies to various pathogens from cohort and vaccine studies. We're looking for someone who is organized and detail-oriented who enjoys working with a supportive team.

Responsibilities

  • Performs laboratory research tasks, including but not limited to, molecular cloning, mammalian and bacterial cell culture, protein purification, flow cytometry and ELISAs.
  • Assists in high throughput binding and neutralizing antibody assays using liquid handling robotics.
  • Makes detailed observations about experiment. Provides quality control, trouble shooting, and the maintenance of specialized reagents and equipment.
  • Comfortable working in a BSL2 environment.
  • Prepares technical reports, summaries, and protocols. Provides basic data analysis and interpretation.
  • Maintains clear and accurate laboratory records, inventories, and logbooks. Performs data entry for research projects and may maintain data and database(s).
  • Follows instructions and standard operating procedures to perform expected tasks.
  • May perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned or directed by the supervisor.

Qualifications

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor's of Science degree preferred.
  • Minimum of 3-5 years experience required.

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Excellent organizational skills.
  • Ability to work well with a team or independently as needed.
  • Knowledge of basic laboratory techniques and sterile practice.
  • Prior experience in cell culture and flow cytometry.
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a T1/Public Trust background check.

Work Environment

  • This position will take place primarily in a laboratory setting.

Compensation

  • The hourly pay rate range for this position is $20.98 - $28.85. Actual hourly pay will be determined based on experience, education, etc.
