Job Summary

Provides wide-ranging support to the research mission of the Department and the research faculty (both basic science and clinical.) Uses skills as a seasoned, experienced administrator to independently manage the administrative components of research, with emphasis on finance and post- award. Work on proposals and awards of diverse scope where analysis of data requires thorough understanding of complex regulations. Completes and approves transactions for signature by manager or other authorized institutional official. Works on complex proposals and awards that may involve multiple investigators and / or multiple sub awards. Guides less experienced staff. Typically manages large and complex grants and contracts which require multiple investigators and multiple sub awards.

The final salary and offer components are subject to additional approvals based on UC policy.

Your placement within the salary range is dependent on a number of factors including your work experience and internal equity within this position classification at UCSF. For positions that are represented by a labor union, placement within the salary range will be guided by the rules in the collective bargaining agreement.

The salary range for this position is $84,400 - $126,700 (Annual Rate).

Department Description

The UCSF Department of Ophthalmology is one of the leading ophthalmology departments in clinical care, training, and research nationwide. The Department of Ophthalmology is a one of the largest recipients of federal grant funds among peer departments. We are ranked 1^st in National Eye Institute Funding and 2^nd in overall National Institutes of Health (NIH) funding in the country. Additionally, we have been the #1 recipient of the Research to Prevent Blindness funding nationwide with nearly $1.2 million granted in a single year. Overall, the Department has a wide-ranging portfolio of 60 active research grants.

UCSF's renowned eye care services has a new state-of-the-art home. In November 2020, the Wayne and Gladys Valley Center for Vision opened its doors. Located at UCSF's Mission Bay Campus, the center houses the Vision Clinics, where many of UCSF's eye care programs relocated, as well as research and teaching facilities. Ophthalmology conducts its patient care, teaching, research, and public service activities currently at multiple UCSF campuses: Parnassus, Mt. Zion, Veteran's Administration Medical Center (VAMC), San Francisco General (SFG), East Bay and Benioff Children's Hospital at Mission Bay and in Oakland. The Department sponsors numerous invited speakers, research seminars, journal clubs, as well as a postdoctoral training program focused on mentorship, networking, and recognition. The UCSF Department of Ophthalmology consists of approximately 300 FTE's (including UCSF Health employees) including faculty, basic scientists, postdoctoral scholars, graduate students, residents, fellows, clinical, research and administrative staff.

Required Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in finance, accounting, economics, business or related area and 3 years
• experience in financial management and/or equivalent combination of education/experience/training.
• Ability to perform complex financial analysis and customized reporting.
• Understand general fund accounting, purchasing, and budgeting, financial projection and business planning concepts.
• Excellent computer skills and facility with using MS Excel (sorting, pivot tables, filtering, basic formulas)
• Demonstrated knowledge of generally accepted accounting, fiscal and reporting principles.
• Demonstrated competence in the use of spreadsheet and database software in financial analysis, fiscal management and financial reports.
• Ability to manage significant volume of transactions.
• Independent judgment and strong organization and communication skills and customer service focus across broad and diverse subject areas.

Preferred Qualifications

• Previous working experience in an academic environment
• Thorough understanding of research administration guidelines of Federal and non-Federal
• sponsors supporting research and educational activities, preferably in a university environment.
• Thorough knowledge of applicable compliance requirements related to use of human or animal subjects in research, financial conflict of interest, biosafety, etc.
• Maintains current knowledge of compliance regulations in all areas of research administration.

License/Certification

• Valid California driver's license
