Horticulture Zoo Worker (Seasonal)

Milwaukee County Zoo

Hourly Pay Rate: $10.36 - $19.17

Job Summary: The Seasonal Horticulture Zoo Worker maintains and preserves horticultural and botanical features using sound horticultural practices, educates visitors, preserves and enhances department assets, and ensures quality service and product delivery. This position will add value to the guest experience here at the Zoo by fulfilling these responsibilities.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:



  • Plant, mulch, fertilize, weed, prune, clean, maintain, and care for ornamental, annual, perennial, turf, and shrub plantings throughout the Zoo grounds.
  • Water annual, perennial, turf, and shrub plantings throughout Zoo grounds and Zoo Greenhouses on a regular schedule throughout the entire growing season. Install and maintain automatic irrigation systems.
  • Create new and renovate existing ornamental and native planting areas through site preparation. This includes invasives removals, soil amending, and grading and installation of hardscape features. Operate hedgers, string trimmers, aerators, rototillers, and other small engine landscaping equipment.
  • Design, setup, maintain seasonal and special event decorative display. Photograph live and artificial plants, using props, lighting, and other elements to enhance seasonal and special event functions of the Zoo.
  • Seasonal maintenance of Zoo grounds includes snow removal, litter and trash collection, and leaf blowing.
  • Provide information and direction to Zoo visitors. Lend assistance to other Zoo departments and Zoo visitors.
  • Must be 18 years or age older to operate vehicles, riding equipment, and landscape equipment.
  • Perform all other duties as assigned.



Minimum Requirements:



  • Must be at least 16 years of age upon application.
  • Basic knowledge of all related computer and software applications, such as word processing and spreadsheets.
  • Able to lift/carry up to 50 lbs. and push/pull up to 75lbs.



Preferred Qualifications:



  • Possession of a valid United States Driver's License, able to be maintained throughout employment.
  • DATCP Category 3.0 or 3.1 pesticide certification, or similar pesticide applicator license.



NOTE: This original application is open to permanent residents of the United States. Appointee must establish residency in the state of Wisconsin within six months of start date and maintain such residency during incumbency. In accordance with Section 11, Rule 3 of the Civil Service Rules a non-competitive examination will be held for this position. The non-competitive examination will consist of criteria deemed appropriate by the Director of Human Resources.
