Position Highlights The University of Arizona James E. Rogers College of Law invites applicants for the position of Assistant Dean of Finance. Reporting to the Associate Dean for Administration, the Assistant Dean for Finance will be the head of a fast-paced office that is the nerve center of the College's operations. This position is a key member of the Dean's Senior Leadership Team. In addition to our traditional law programs, the College has a number of unique non-JD programs such as our BA in Law and Master of Legal Studies programs, professional/executive programs, and international programs. Critical to the success of the College's diverse spectrum of programs is understanding and planning for the financial return on these investments and forecasting for effective resource management. The Assistant Dean's role is critical to the planning and success of the College's ventures.

Duties & Responsibilities

Management

  • Provide strategic leadership, supervision and mentor employees in the College's Business/Finance Office, which is a team of approximately 7 employees
  • Provide clear direction and strategic guidance, ensuring operational efficiency and alignment with the College's financial and administrative objectives
  • Develop and implement training initiatives to enhance team competencies, ensure compliance with institutional policies, and support process optimization
  • Conduct regular team meetings to communicate priorities, address challenges, and enhance collaboration
  • Lead and oversee annual career conversations, ensuring meaningful discussions around performance, growth opportunities, and career progression

Budgeting and Financial Analysis

  • Assure timely development and preparation of comprehensive annual College "all funds" budget (approx. $23 million annually), taking into account revenues from a diverse set of sources
  • Establish and manage budget categories and operating budgets. Monitor budget during the course of the fiscal year. Monitor account balances, encumbrances, and transaction coding
  • Create, implement, and maintain financial reporting systems that are relevant to the unique needs of the College and that are accurate and flexible
  • Advise the Dean as to the best utilization and leveraging of College resources
  • Analyze budget needs and requests; utilize budget and historical data to assist with planning future needs for hiring, student support, and other college initiatives
  • Provide analysis, planning, and strategic budgeting for new enterprises and initiatives
  • Oversee and monitor fulfillment of commitments such as startup, retention, faculty incentives, renovation, salary, and program development
  • Review and analyze current budget allocation and possible impact of new budget model
  • Prepare and make presentations to faculty, staff, and university leadership to report College financial projections

Financial Transactions Oversight

  • Ensure transactional work is managed in accordance with university policies and procedures
  • Communicate financial information and business policies and procedures to faculty, administrators, staff, students, and stakeholders
  • Oversee College's Foundation and UA Gift accounts ensuring proper use of funds
  • Monitor expenditure of funds for adherence to policies and procedures of the College, university, federal government, state, and the Law College Association
  • Manage Faculty research allotment expense reporting and assist faculty with reimbursements
  • Serve as College approver of MSS transactions

Other

  • In partnership with University centralized human resources, provide leadership for the human resources functions for the College
  • Supervise grant administrator's handling of all pre- and post award grant management; provide information, advice, and training to college personnel in grant proposals and implementation. Oversee grant administrator's work with Engineering Research Administration Services (ERAS) on routing and submission of proposals
  • Collaborate with the college's Alumni & Development team on gift-related matters
  • Collaborate with the college's admissions and financial aid team on scholarship and tuition waivers and the posting of same to Bursar accounts and UAccess
  • Serve as a member of College and University committees including Senior Leadership Team (SLT), College Scholarship Stakeholders, College Academic Business Officers (CABO), and University Business Officers (UBO)
  • Other duties as assigned

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Proficient skills in financial principles and the ability to prepare and dissect complex budgets
  • Knowledge of financial modeling, variance analysis, and interpretation of financial data
  • Ability to clearly explain financial information to faculty, staff, and senior administrators both verbally and in writing
  • Knowledge in accounting principles, governmental accounting, and University policies and procedures
  • Ability to write, interpret, implement, and communicate policies and procedures
Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent advanced learning attained through professional level experience required.
  • Minimum of 11 years of related work experience, including 7 years of managerial experience, preferably in large complex institutions or organizations, or equivalent combination of education and work experience. Requires experience in leading multiple teams, projects, programs, and/or functions.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience leading financial operations in a complex organization
  • Master's degree in business and/or finance
  • Progressive responsibility and experience in an academic institution
  • Experience with university systems (i.e. UA Analytics and All Funds Budgeting Reporting)
