Description

Metra is one of the largest and most complex commuter rail systems in North America, serving Cook, DuPage, Will, Lake, Kane, and McHenry Counties. The agency is linking communities in Northeastern Illinois by providing safe, reliable, and efficient commuter service.

Engineering is responsible for building and maintaining the majority of Metra's fixed assets, such as buildings, stations, bridges, track, electrical, telecommunications and signal systems. The Engineering Department also monitors the condition of and assists in building and maintaining the fixed assets on the freight lines where Metra trains operate. The Engineering Department is divided into two major groups: Capital Projects, and Communications and Maintenance.

Reporting to the A.C. Supervisor, the A.C. Electrician is responsible for performing all aspects of electrical work, including utility pole and/or steel structure aerial lineman work. In addition to installing and repairing HVAC systems, this position is responsible for construction, maintenance, repairs, and wiring of medium voltage electrical switchgear, HVAC systems, electric snowmelter controls and equipment, A.C. overhead/underground distribution systems up to 12KV A.C., and other electrical equipment used in buildings, shops, commuter stations, and yards. Responsible for processing paperwork and replenishing inventory and materials. This position is subject to an emergency after-hours call out and assignment to overtime. Employees may perform other related duties as assigned to meet the ongoing needs of the organization.

This is a Union position. Starting pay rates may vary based on entry rates in the Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA).

Requirements
  1. Must possess a bachelor's degree in Electrical/Electronic Engineering, be a journeyman Electrician or possess a minimum four (4) years of equivalent experience.
  2. In addition to #1, able to climb ladders, structures, poles and work in aerial position from a line belt and bucket truck.
  3. Able to lift, carry, and move up to 150 lbs. with the assistance of another crew member.
  4. Possess a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) class "B" with an air brakes endorsement. (Candidates will have 14 days to acquire a CDL Permit and 60 days to acquire the CDL.)
  5. Able to pass the Metra M.O.W. Rules within sixty (60) days of hire and pass the Metra Roadway Worker Rules within thirty (30) days of hire.
  6. Available to work a forty (40) hour week, be available on call 24-hours/day, 7 days/week, 365 days/year including weekends and holidays.

Preferences:

  1. An EPA Universal Refrigeration Certification for HVAC is preferred.
