Description
The salary range for this position is $60,000 to $72,200, depending on experience and qualifications. Summary Under the oversight of the Operations Manager, will be responsible for organizing and directing the day-to-day function of the Mill department by planning and delegating the completion of all assigned tasks. Will also be responsible for overseeing manufacturing quality feed in a safe manner that will optimize efficiency, routine maintenance repairs, repair/improvement projects, general housekeeping, and directing the work activities of the Mill Techs. Key Responsibilities: Feed Quality/Safety
- Perform all functions of the position with strict adherence to the feed safety program including GMPs, and regulatory protocols.
- Ensure the feed safety program review training program is completed each month as assigned.
- Ensure that products and materials are handled and stored in such a way as to prevent damage or product contamination.
- Maintain compliance with the personnel and process hygiene requirements.
- Inform Operations Manager and Quality
Assurance Manager if any repairs, maintenance or other work poses a potential threat to feed safety.
Daily Operations
- Communicate with Production manager and Pullet manager to coordinate feed deliveries.
- Takes ownership of the day to day operations of the Mill department.
- Respond to ongoing challenges by recommending improvements in line with priority and budgetary constraints.
- Identifies areas of operational conflicts with departmental procedures and suggests alternative solutions.
- Produces and submits reports as requested by the Operations Manager
Personnel Management & Development
- Determine employee schedules, task sequences, and assignments for work activities, based on work priority, quantity of work, and skill of personnel.
- Inspect and monitor work areas, examine tools and equipment, and correct unsafe conditions or violations of procedures and safety rules.
- Attend weekly departmental meetings to provide progress reports for the milling department, which includes issues with personnel, equipment, safety, and key point indicators.
- Review all open action lists, ensuring all target dates are met.
Batching
- Oversee and create if needed daily feed orders to optimize efficiency.
- Oversee the manufacture of complete poultry feed using computerized batching system.
- Oversee the receiving of ingredients and accurate records of each load and lot number.
- Oversee the tracking of ingredients used in each feed order by reviewing lot and load numbers.
- Maintain samples of feed and ingredients and submit as required by testing schedule.
- Write and maintain standard operating procedures by providing accurate feedback of the effectiveness of SOP's.
- Must comply with company and regulatory feed safety requirements.
Maintenance Operations
- Take the lead in maintaining a safe milling environment, following safety procedures and assisting in the training of other stakeholders. Examples: LOTO, confined space entry, SDS, fall protection and PPE.
- Maintain and implement a preventative maintenance program for mill equipment and related feed delivery system.
- Schedule any downtime for repairs and maintenance.
- Oversee the completion of good housekeeping and cleanliness of all areas of the mill.
- Organize and initiate improvement projects of mill equipment and building.
- Work with trucking supervisor to ensure tractors and trailers are properly maintained and meet DOT requirements.
Purchasing and Inventory
- Ensure all data is entered in the daily tracking of ingredient inventories at the end of each day.
- Report possible conflicts with predicted ingredient usage with upcoming ingredient deliveries.
- Enter data into corn position report and settlement sheets as required by the State of Iowa.
- Maintain adequate levels of safety supplies by submitting purchase orders to Operations Manager
- Maintain adequate levels of materials, parts, equipment and tools by submitting purchase orders to the Operations Manager
Animal Welfare
- Ensures animal health and welfare by daily monitoring mill operations
- Assures flocks have proper supply of safe, quality feed.
Marginal Functions:
- Maintain grounds around Mill and other department facilities as needed.
- Assist other departments as needed.
- Perform duties of safety committee member when required.
Qualifications: Education
- High School Diploma required.
- Post high school education in agriculture related field preferred
Certifications
- Must have a valid Commercial Driver's License (Preferred) Or be able to obtain one within 6 months of hire
- Must have or the ability to obtain a DOT health certificate.(Preferred)
Experience
- 2 years verifiable experience in a Milling environment preferred.
- Experience trouble-shooting electrical motors, motor controls, and material handling equipment is a must.
- Experience in operating and maintaining tractor/trailer semi preferred.
- Experience operating forklift, skid steer, wheel loader, and farm tractors is preferred.
- Experience in supervising people preferred.
- Welding experience preferred.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Good communication skills with a teamwork attitude are essential.
- Good organizational skills are essential.
- Computer skills in MS Word and Excel and Access a plus.
- Must be able to handle many tasks at the same time.
- Must have the ability to relate to and communicate accurately with people such as suppliers, truck drivers, farmers and brokers.
- Must have the ability to lead others.
- Must be able to prioritize tasks.
- Welding skills preferred.
- Must have a basic understanding of electrical motors, motor controls, and material handling equipment.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to lift, carry and walk-up steps carrying up to 60 pounds.
- Ability to lift 100 pounds to waist height
- Must have the ability to climb ladders and work in high places up to 130 ft.
- Must be able to spend entire day on feet walking, standing, or climbing.
- Must be able to work indoors and outdoors.
- Work with protective equipment (Masks for dust and harness for climbing)
- Ability to work in a confined space
- Ability to work in dusty environment and around feed stuff.
Working Conditions
- The environment will be dusty at times and work may be conducted inside and out.
- Must dress for seasonal weather conditions, etc.
- The work schedule will include some weekends and holidays with all feed manufacturing requirements met on a daily basis without fail.
