Full-Time Tenure-Track Faculty - American English as a Second Language (AESL) - School of Language & Literature

Teach all levels of American English as a Second Language (AESL) and AESL College Student Success courses. Position coordinates the AESL Program and includes additional responsibilities, such as student placement, curriculum development, advising AESL students outside faculty load, assessment, coordination across the college to support students, etc. (See AESL Coordinator description below.)

Requirement:

  • The faculty member must be available to teach at all campuses and through all modalities (in-person, online, or hybrid).

Primary Functions:

  • Teach courses in grammar, pronunciation, reading, writing, listening, and speaking.

  • Create, evaluate, and review credit and AESL curriculum.

  • Advise AESL students.

  • Prepare students for the progression of the college composition and reading curriculum.

  • Keep current in best practices through active participation with TESOL organizations, both regionally and nationally. Coordinate AESL Program. (See AESL Coordinator description below.)

Secondary Function:

  • Attend professional development opportunities, serve on academic committees, contribute to the department and college.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Master's in Teaching English as Second or Other Language or highly related field

  • Experience teaching and supporting AESL and developmental education students.

  • Strong communication skills

  • Ability to collaborate with support services.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Community college teaching experience.

  • Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion; advising experience.

  • Experience with utilizing instructional technologies

  • Experience with curriculum development.

  • Knowledge of outcomes-based assessment.

AESL Coordinator Description (3 Credits)

Coordinates the AESL Area; serves on hiring committee for part-time AESL faculty; provides mentoring to new part-time faculty; schedules and attends professional development activities for AESL faculty; assists with curriculum development and updates for AESL courses; reviews and selects course textbooks; coordinates assessment activities for all AESL courses with department assessment fellow; creates semester draft schedule for all AESL courses; develops and revises AESL curriculum; determines AESL student placement using reading and writing scores, as well as an oral assessment; conducts all AESL new student interviews; advises all AESL students once Level 2 reading is attained; advises during walk-in registration events; collaborates with the Reading Area Coordinator to include AESL students eligible for acceleration programs; communicates and coordinates with area high schools to promote the program, including visits to the schools; represents the college at community events, universities, and secondary schools; coordinates with non-credit ESL Coordinator to create pathways for students; liaises with staff from Admissions, Financial Aid, Testing, and Registration to resolve issues on behalf of students; presents at workshops and faculty meetings on the needs of English language learners outside the Language and Literature Department; communicates with community ESL program coordinators who refer students to the college; meets weekly with Department Dean; and anything else related, as needed.

Coordinator responsibilities are mainly fulfilled through in-person work scheduled at the Newtown Campus. Some responsibilities may be fulfilled through remote work at the discretion of the dean.

Outside of the nine-month contract, the successful candidate will have additional responsibilities throughout the summer as Load Credit Equivalent (LCE) work.
