JOB DESCRIPTION AND POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

Upward Bound Programs (UBP), which includes Upward Bound/Upward Bound Migrant/Upward Bound Math and Science (UB/UBM/UBMS), is seeking Instructors for the 2025 Summer Academy, which will be held June 15- July 25. Upward Bound Programs is a federally funded program at Penn State that prepares low-income, first-generation high school students for future success in college.

The UB/UBM/UBMS Summer Academy plans to host approximately 60 students for in-person and virtual instruction and programming during a six-week program that will offer a taste of college life as well as assistance with academic courses.

Responsibilities for this position include:

  • Deliver 20-30 hours of specific content area instruction that focuses on historically and culturally relevant and responsive learning for diverse high school students from across Central and Eastern Pennsylvania.

  • Attend 10-20 hours of professional development and orientation programming beginning in April through the start of the Summer Academy in June.

  • Meet with the Curriculum and Instruction Coordinator for a pre-summer one-on-one.

  • Create a course scope and sequence to be delivered to Upward Bound Curriculum and Pedagogy Coordinator by June 1, 2025.

  • Participate in weekly instructional staff meetings during the summer academy.

  • Serve as "second authorized adult" in another course.

  • Participate in one scheduled "Meet Your Instructor" panel during the summer academy.

  • Build authentic, meaningful, and professional relationships with high school students.

  • Maintain all course materials.

  • Attend all scheduled course sessions.

  • Maintain attendance records.

  • Communicate efficiently and clearly with all Upward Bound staff and Residential Mentors.

Instructors are encouraged to use student-centered teaching methods, field trips and activities, and other creative means to support their lessons. Class size will be 15 to 20 high school students. Instructors are needed in the following high school content areas:

  • Critical Reading and Writing

  • Math - including Algebra 1 & 2, Geometry, Trig/Pre-Calc, and Calculus

  • Science - including Chemistry, Biology, Environmental Science, Earth Science, Physics, and Engineering

  • World Languages

Candidates who have at least a bachelor's degree with relevant teaching experience, are an undergraduate student majoring in Education or related field, or an undergraduate student with extensive teaching assistant experience are preferred.

Applicants should possess excellent written/oral communication skills and must be committed to helping underrepresented students realize their potential.

Candidates are required to have a current background check on record with the University at the time of hire and/or beginning work with minors as well as appropriate clearances for adults working with minors: PA State Police Criminal Background Check, PA Child Abuse History Clearance, and Federal (FBI) Fingerprint Background Check. Failure to submit clearances before the Summer Academy will result in an immediate dismissal.

There are remote and in-person instructional positions available.

The salary for this position is $3500 per course taught.
