The Copy and Production team handles all print and Web production, copy editing, and proofreading for The New Yorker. The Director of Copy and Production will devise, implement, and directly oversee the integration of bifurcated print and Web processes and further the adoption of workflows that prioritize the digital reading experience while maintaining an excellent print product. Overseeing roughly 40 employees, including the Head of Copy, the Director of Production, and the Associate Director of Copy and Production, the Director of Copy and Production is an expert manager who is able to direct large-scale operational changes, identify and deploy new tools and workflows, balance rigor with efficiency, and effectively manage and train employees on new skills and technologies. This process thinker possesses excellent creative and news judgment, strong editorial instincts, visionary leadership skills, and the ability to manage stakeholders with diplomacy and tact.

Responsibilities:

  • Devise and direct the adoption of digital-first processes across the Copy and Production department, collaborating with executive management to plan and refine the roll out of new workflows across the organization.

  • Cultivate a spirit of innovation, collaboration, and enthusiasm for one unified, platform-agnostic New Yorker, both within the department and across the broader newsroom.

  • Identify, recommend, and implement the adoption of new tools and workflow improvements across the team.

  • Insure that all employees are trained in relevant processes, technologies, and skills; work with direct managers to track progress and deliver timely feedback to employees learning new skills.

  • Collaborate with executive management, H.R., and labor relations to insure that the Collective Bargaining Agreement is upheld as jobs become more platform-agnostic.

  • Influence decision-making on day-to-day matters of editorial judgment, workflows, pacing, and delegation.

  • Oversee the allocation of resources across departments; assist direct managers in securing approval for freelance support and/or structural changes as needed.

  • Coordinate with department heads to insure effective collaboration across the team, and with other departments, and to insure that the team is functioning as expected.

  • Work with teams across the organization to remove roadblocks to executing our editorial vision across platforms, including liaising with design, product, and engineering teams to launch and troubleshoot products.

  • Assist direct managers in reviewing applications for and interviewing potential hires.

  • Review team members' work to offer additional feedback.

  • Copy-editing and production duties, as needed.

  • Offer input on editorial policy considerations.

  • Additional duties as required, or as assigned by manager.

Skills and Qualifications:

  • Discretion, diplomacy, and the ability to take clear, decisive managerial action.

  • At least five years of management experience, with a proven record of effective leadership through change.

  • An ability to balance team priorities and concerns with organizational priorities and concerns.

  • Demonstrated ability to manage copy and production workflows with multiple team members and encourage teams to meet deadlines.

  • Ability to reliably and regularly make complex editorial decisions independently.

  • Strong editorial instincts and news judgment.

  • A finely tuned ear for language and a demonstrated ability to work at the speed of the Web while communicating clearly.

  • Excellent writing and editing skills.

  • The ability to meet deadlines while handling multiple tasks simultaneously.

  • The ability to communicate and coordinate with managers, editors, writers, fact checkers, and others, balancing needs and priorities.

  • Experience working with content-management systems, such as Wordpress for publishing Web content, and InCopy/K4 for publishing print content.

  • Experience working with Google Docs (tracking changes, commenting, permissions) and Microsoft Word.

  • Familiarity with the history, style, and values of The New Yorker.

  • Willingness to work early mornings, nights, weekends, and holidays, as needed.

The expected base salary range for this position is from $140,000-$160,000. Salary offers are based on a wide range of factors including but not limited to relevant skills, training, experience, and education.
