Senior Solar Technician

General Purpose of Work. Performs, with minimal supervision, duties including but not limited to: inspection, installation, evaluation, testing, calibration, troubleshooting, and maintenance of solar photovoltaic systems.

General Duties - All in Regards to Working on Solar Photovoltaic Systems.

  • May be assigned to lead and direct the work of other Solar Technicians.
  • Applies safe work practices and follows MGE safety procedures without direct supervision.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and experience working with systems emergency procedures.
  • Demonstrated competence and skill in operation and maintenance of solar photovoltaic systems.
  • Monitors and is aware of the physical and electrical condition of systems.
  • Reviews and updates procedures.
  • Commissions completed solar projects.
  • Performs site visits to confirm solar designs.
  • Troubleshoots solar projects and performs basic steps to fix potential problems.
  • Works with city inspectors to obtain final inspection sign-offs.
  • Regularly assesses and apprises supervisor regarding functionality of equipment and reports malfunctions that may affect safety, reliability, or load capability as soon as practicable.
  • Performs various routine operational and maintenance-related duties including predictive and preventative maintenance activities.
  • Performs off-line and on-line function tests and monitors performance.
  • Reviews design drawings, relay settings, and other site-specific diagrams.
  • Demonstrated experience with activities associated with the regulatory system compliance.
  • Provides site tours.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications. The target candidate for this position is a range of installation personnel including but not limited to: installers, project managers, and designers who possess the following qualifications:

  • Must be a member of North American Board of Certified Energy Practitioners (NABCEP).
  • Associate's Degree in Solar Technology or equivalent job experience.
  • Master Electrician.
  • Installation Professional Certification preferred.
  • Minimum of three years related experience.
  • Must have and keep a valid Wisconsin driver's license.
  • Strong communications skills.
  • Strong organizational skills.
  • Detail-oriented approach to all work performed.
  • Must be able to work independently.

Knowledge and Skills to be Acquired.

  • Must demonstrate good tact, poise, and a courteous, competent manner in relationships with customers.
  • Must demonstrate specific knowledge of solar photovoltaic systems.
  • Must demonstrate excellent ability to diagnose trouble in equipment.
  • Must demonstrate good initiative, good work planning, and organization of own work.
