Advanced Practice Provider Urology

Summary:
Under the medical supervision of the Urology Residency Site Director or delegated urologic physician and administratively under the Administrative Director of the MIUI performs a variety of duties to encompass but are not limited to the care and management of pre- and post-operative urology patients. Works in a collaborative team environment that supports the academic mission to train urology residents. All essential functions performed in this position reflect the age specific needs of the patient.

Responsibilities:

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Serves as an active member of the MIUI service line attending shared governance meetings and other sub groups as required to achieve the goals and objectives of the service line The Miriam Hospital and Brown University Health.

Works closely with the urology residents as part of the urology team to coordinate patient care needs day-to-day for patients.

Obtains and records detailed medical histories. Performs and records complete and detailed physical examinations. Records all pertinent patient information in the progress notes within the medical records.

Assists in the preparation of discharge summaries.

Initiates life saving measures in emergency situations until aid arrives.

Initiates patient orders for admission as directed by the physician and in accordance with the hospital procedure.

Assesses patient status participates in the development of patient care management plans through communication and collaboration with the Registered Nurses attending physicians residents and other members of the interdisciplinary team.

Attends and participates in daily collaborative care rounds

Performs credentialed procedures as delineated by the medical staff credentialing requirements which may include: insertion and removal of urethral catheters cystoscopy suture or staple removal draws blood gases inserts peripheral IV lines insertion of nasogastric tubes for maintaining decompression of the stomach penile intracavernosal injections and irrigation for priapism.

May evaluate and care for patients who present who in the Emergency Room with urology problems.

Provides wound care including cleaning and debridement of wounds as well as dressing changes.

Enters orders as needed into Lifechart.

Assists on research projects as requested.

Will see each patient admitted to the clinical service on a daily basis
Provides education for nursing staff as needed

Provide patient education during the daily delivery of care and during pre-operative education sessions as needed

Participates in Surgical Service Educational activities. Annually completes required training in urology.

Performs other related duties as required.

Other information:

BASIC KNOWLEDGE:

Graduate from an accredited Nurse practitioner program with MS degree. Certified by the American Nurses Association (ANA) or by the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners (AANP) to practice in the expanded role. License must include prescriptive privileges including narcotics.

Graduated for a Physician Assistant program with a master*s degree and has current board certification from the NCCPA

Have completed a course in American Heart Association Basic Life Support/Advanced Cardiac Life Support.

Demonstrated knowledge and skills necessary to provide care to patients throughout the life span with consideration of aging processes human development stages and cultural patterns in each step of the care process.

EXPERIENCE:

Experience in General Urology Surgery and Emergency Room procedures preferred but not required.

WORK ENVIRONMENT AND PHYSICIAL REQUIREMENTS:

Works with medical equipment and has direct patient contact. Any potential hazards are minimized by adherence to established safety procedures and precautions including use safety equipment and protective clothing.

Walks and stands intermittently throughout the day. Subject to electrical and energy hazards. May lift and position patients and lift supplies up to 50 pounds.

INDEPENDENT ACTION:

Incumbent functions independently within a broad scope of departmental policies and practices; generally refers specific problems to Co-Director of the Minimally Invasive Urology Institute or the Administrative Director only where clarification of department policies and procedures may be required.
