Job Summary

Experienced technical professional who provides internal and external technical support in the development and application of products, processing techniques, and resolution of problems. Plans project approaches and routinely formulates work plans. Supports sales by demonstrating technical applications knowledge of the product and/or technical solutions at the customer. Troubleshoots service, delivery and customer application problems.

We enable the growth by creation of new ingredients combo, new format, new technology to process probiotics and application of probiotics in broader format from tablet, capsule, sachet, stick, food & beverage, to new format beyond and defend our market leading position by technical in-depth and scientific expertise.

As an application specialist, you will be responsible for maintaining an ingredients, excipients, and packaging material database, onboarding new excipients and packaging material, evaluate raw material's properties, provide technical insight of those raw materials and packaging materials to formulators, and support quality to qualify raw materials and packaging materials into production suite and food lab.

This position works under general supervision and develop skills and technical knowledge in certain special fields. Builds understandings of raw materials, packaging materials, finished products, knowledge of probiotics and other active ingredients, and customer bases. Manages small to medium projects as assigned. Test formula from bench top scale to pilot scale.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

To succeed in this position, the candidate should be able to perform the following tasks, including but not limited to:

  • Introduce and qualify new excipients (carriers, sweeteners, flavors, flow aids), packaging material (bottles, film, desiccant, carton, sachet) into Madison application lab and production suite.
  • Review specification and technical data of existing excipients and packaging material, provide technical insight to formulators.
  • Set up and maintain a raw material and packaging material database with guidance from Application Scientist and C&A manager.
  • Being partner with regulation, quality, food safety, and business team to provide holistic and scientific review on the raw materials and packaging materials.
  • Support formulators to run experiment of new formula, new format and new strains, and provide prototypes and samples from bench top to pilot.
  • Test the feasibility of formulation like capsule slug test, tablet measurement, analyze data and generate technical report.
  • Work with quality to qualify raw materials and packaging materials in production suite and food lab.
  • Work with Quality to set up and continuously improve the food safety and quality program in Food Lab from a technical perspective.
  • Work with quality and suite team to fill the gap on technical documents of process, equipment and instrument in production suite.
  • Develop knowledge of lab and pilot scale equipment include but not limited to capsule filler, auto capsulation machine, stick/sachet packer, tablet press.
  • Develop knowledge of testing and evaluation method include but not limited to capsule slug formability, tablet friability/hardness/disintegration, stick sealing performance.
  • Manage small to medium projects, priorities projects with business acumen.
  • Communicate results to manager and project/program stakeholders on a regular basis.
  • Work will be performed in an office setting (cubicle) 50%-80% and in a lab environment 20%-50% upon different projects.
  • This position is anchor to the site but with flexibility to work remotely occasionally.

Job Requirements

  • Bachelor of Science or engineering degree in a relevant discipline, such as Food, Pharmaceutical, Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, or Life Sciences and 5+ years' experience in industry
  • Master's degree in a relevant discipline and 3+ years' experience in industry
  • Application of Methodologies
  • Experience with ingredients and packaging materials
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Critical thinking and problem solving
  • Basic project management skills and design of experiment skills
  • Good data analysis, reporting and presentation skills
  • Good collaboration spirit and execution excellence
  • Experience with tablet, capsule, stick, sachet, food, and beverage is preferred
  • Experience with powder characteristic, process verification and scale up is preferred
  • Experience with working in a GMP environment and basic Quality and Food Safety knowledge is preferred
