We are seeking a highly motivated and experienced Manager of Radiological Operations for the Sandia Radiation Protection Organization to lead and oversee one of two Radiological Operations Departments, each made up of three operationally embedded Radiological Operational Programs in the field serving a wide array of Sandia Research and Development (R&D) and Engineering and Operations (E&O) Missions-spaces overseeing specific Program teams and Projects including but not limited to the Nuclear Weapons Mission (Stockpile Management and Modernization), Radiography and Sandia Facilities Logistics, Accelerators, Radiation Effects, Pulsed Power and Directed Energy Programs, and National and Global Security Missions for Threat Assessment, Weapons of Mass Destruction Counterterrorism and Response, and Global Nuclear Security and Nonproliferation.

Radiological Operations Managers report directly to the Senior Manager of Radiation Protection, an Organization within the Environmental, Safety and Health (ES&H) Center and the Infrastructure Operations Division of Sandia National Laboratories.

The Radiation Protection Organization is comprised of four interdependent Departments that collectively uphold all 10 CFR 835 and all other applicable Federal, State, and Corporate requirements of Sandia National Laboratories Radiation Protection Program in the delivery of all Radiation Protection services across many internal Radiation Protection Organization Programs such as Dosimetry, Sample Diagnostics, Instrumentation, Quality and Compliance, Training, etc., as well as outwardly for all Radiological Operations Programs in the field alongside our numerous R&D and E&O Customers.

As such, the selected Radiological Operations Manager will be charged with understanding the scope of and making risk-based determinations to lead and oversee all described operations across their Department, managing a staff of approximately 30 direct reports across temporary, contractor and full-time staff, in both Professional Scientific/Engineering and Technologist roles specializing in the disciplines of Radiation Protection, Health Physics, Radiation/Radiological Engineering, and/or Nuclear Engineering in the safe and compliant completion of all such operations.

Thus, a proven track-record in one of these areas or a closely related STEM field, as well as demonstrated incremental growth in mounting leadership roles with increasing responsibilities is required for successful candidacy for this role.

Lead - Provide leadership direction and Radiation Protection expertise to the Radiation Protection Organization and beyond by...



  • Actively participating in the planning, development, ownership, galvanization around and mobilization and implementation of a unified Radiation Protection Organization strategic vision and business plan that appropriately balances the needs and priorities of each Radiation Protection Department and the direction of the Center, Division and Corporation.

  • Cultivating an understanding of and advocating for the needs of your staff and Programs within your Department while balancing the needs of the Radiation Protection Organization as a whole as well as those of the Center, Division and Corporation through all interactions with your staff, peer group and all levels of management both inside and outside of Radiation Protection such that a collaborative Radiation Protection and ES&H Leadership Team are developed and maintained.

  • Developing and championing a collaborative Radiation Protection Department that actively and appropriately pursues and leverages the specialized knowledge, skills, and abilities of all stakeholders across all Programs and Departments of the Radiation Protection Organization, the Center, Division and Customer partners to drive targeted Program/Project-level results.

  • Successfully prioritizing, coordinating, developing and implementing Radiation Protection (RP) policies, processes, requirements (regulatory and otherwise) and targeted Program/Project-level deliverables such as budgets, structures, schedules and staffing plans to unleash excellence by driving significant functional, budgetary and other targeted improvements and efficiencies in alignment with the strategic vision and business plan of the Radiation Protection Organization, and the direction of the Center, Division and Corporation.

  • Owning accountability related to the continued successful stewardship and application of all Federal, State, Corporate and Radiation Protection processes, policies, and requirements (regulatory and otherwise) across each Radiological Operations Program led.

  • Ensuring that Customer needs are satisfied by managing and coordinating the deliverables of your department such as Program/Project plans, schedules, purchases, training, and budgetary/staffing needs in alignment with the direction and strategic goals of the Radiation Protection Organization, Center, Division and Corporation.

Salary Range:

$133,800 - $227,500

*Salary range is estimated, and actual salary will be determined after consideration of the selected candidate's experience and qualifications, and application of any approved geographic salary differential.

Qualifications We Require:



  • Bachelor's degree in relevant discipline, such as Physics, Health Physics, Radiation Protection, Radiological Sciences and Engineering, Nuclear Engineering, etc., or equivalent combination of such relevant education and experience.

  • Equivalent experience in lieu of degree must be directly related experience that must be in one of the relevant or closely aligned scientific or engineering disciplines identified that demonstrate the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform in-depth calculations and risk-assessment/independent analysis, and creation of models, as well as appropriate regulatory assessments related to ensuring radiological safety and health in the field to meet Federal, State and Corporate regulatory requirements.

  • Plus, (8) or more years of directly related operational health physics/radiation protection /radiological sciences and engineering experience that demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the duties of the job.

  • And, must include a minimum of two years of direct, demonstrated leadership experience - to include management/supervision of direct reports/teams.

  • Competent in federal, state, local, and industry radiation protection regulations.

  • Competent in interfacing with external regulatory body personnel.

  • Working knowledge of 10CFR835 and/or 10CFR20 and 10CFR830.

  • Ability to obtain and maintain US DOE Q-level security clearance.

  • Possession of a valid driver's license and ability to operate a government vehicle.



Qualifications We Desire:



  • Master's degree or greater in relevant discipline, such as Physics, Health Physics, Radiation Protection, Radiological Sciences and Engineering, Nuclear Engineering, etc.

  • Current certification by the American Board of Health Physics (ABHP) or actively pursuing certification.

  • Demonstrated ability to effectively respond to, and direct others in, emergency and abnormal situations.

  • Willingness to participate in the SNL Human Reliability Program, if required by RP Department activities.

  • Demonstrated interpersonal relationship skills and the ability to interact effectively with RP and Line organization personnel, other Environment, Safety & Health (ES&H) organizations, senior SNL management, external entities, and NNSA/DOE or other governmental agency officials.



About Our Team:

The Radiation Protection Organization provides radiation protection services to Sandia line organizations and is the steward of the Corporate Radiation Protection Program. Services provided include: translation of DOE directives and Federal rules into Sandia specific requirements and guidance; development of tools to assist in the identification and control of hazards associated with the use of radioactive materials and radiation-generating devices; providing trained and qualified personnel for radiological activities and operations throughout the Laboratories; radiation protection instrumentation calibration and maintenance; and workplace sampling and monitoring services to ensure effectiveness of radiological controls. The Organization works with the Corporate Radiation Protection Safety Committee to establish goals, measure performance, and perform assessments to collect data to support continuous improvement in the safe performance of radiological operations across Sandia National Laboratories.
