Idaho National Laboratory is hiring a Nuclear Fuel Materials Scientist to work in our Advanced Fuel Manufacturing & Development Department. Our team works a 4x10 schedule located out of our Materials & Fuels Complex with every Friday off.

Our team specializes in the production, processing, and characterization of radiological nuclear fuel materials, such as uranium and its various alloys and compounds. You will apply experience to solve problems related to engineering materials important to nuclear fuels. This will involve collaborating with professionals around the world, from academia to some of the companies developing the nuclear technologies that could change the world's energy future. You will have the opportunity to investigate new materials, to develop new and improved manufacturing processes, to perform advanced characterization of materials and to advance the scientific understanding of the relationship between these aspects affect each other. Responsibilities Include:



  • Support materials testing and characterization for multiple research programs.
  • Work with other experts, partner companies, and government agencies to identify needs, and propose materials science-based solutions that can earn support for a chance to execute them.
  • Contribute to and, potentially, lead scientific research projects, including developing scope descriptions, coordinating various technical contributors, ensuring environmental compliance and quality assurance, reporting results to stakeholders, and managing schedule and cost performance.
  • Publish novel research in peer reviewed journals to share your successes widely and reflect positively on you and your contributing peers.
  • Provide technical solutions and position INL for potential strategic business ventures.
  • Demonstrate and champion safe laboratory operations that comply with all applicable regulatory requirements and administrative commitments.
  • Mentor and support peers and junior staff in technical growth.
  • You will report to the Department Manager.

Qualifications

Minimum Requirements:



  • Level 3: Master's and 2 years of experience. PhD and 2 years of experience. Education from an ABET accredited institution in Materials Science and Engineering or closely related field.
  • Level 4: Master's and 6 years of experience. PhD and 4 years of experience. Education from an ABET accredited institution in Materials Science and Engineering or closely related field.
  • Experience proposing research topics, executing research including hands-on work, and publishing results in peer-reviewed journals.
  • Experience with material characterization techniques and their development such as: microscopy, X-Ray Diffraction (XRD), mechanical property testing, thermal property testing, or chemical and isotopic analysis.
  • This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a Department of Energy L clearance, which requires US Citizenship.


Preferred Experience:



  • Experience in nuclear fuel development, characterization, and fabrication
  • Familiarity with the nuclear fuel cycle, especially fuel manufacturing
  • Deep experience in performing hands-on work, especially with radiological materials or other work subject to stringent requirements.
  • Demonstrated technical communication skills, including the ability to coordinate complex work tasks and to convey technical topics to various audiences.
  • Experience leading small project teams and managing technical collaborations, including multi-disciplinary teams and when stakeholders are located in different physical work locations.


Job Information:



  • The pay range for this position is: Level #3 $93,204.00 - $191,076.00 / Level #4 $111,888.00 - $229,284.00). At Idaho National Laboratory compensation decisions are determined using factors such as education, relevant experience, and other credentials.
  • TDP: This is a testing designated position; you will be required to submit to a pre-employment drug screen and periodic drug testing throughout the term of your employment.
  • Multi-Level: This is a multi-level posting and you will be placed at the appropriate level dependent on depth and breadth of proven experience and skills.
