About Us: The UW School of Medicine and Public Health (SMPH) is a leader in research and innovation, dedicated to improving patient outcomes through advanced data science and analytics. We are seeking an experienced Data Integration Engineer for the Wisconsin Health Data Hub (WHDH), recently funded by the EDA as part of the Tech Hub (https://news.wisc.edu/federal-funds-awarded-for-biohealth-with-uw-madison-leading-the-way/) initiative, and drive transformative data science projects to enhance healthcare and research at SMPH.

Join our dynamic Informatics and Information Technology team at the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health in Madison, Wisconsin. We are committed to revolutionizing healthcare through implementation of advanced data science approaches, conducting cutting-edge data-centric research, and generating real-world evidence to improve patient health outcomes at UW Health and beyond. The Data Integration Engineer will be responsible for integrating multifaceted biomedical data and designing/ implementing end-to-end data solutions using Azure.

On a day-to-day basis, the incumbent could expect to engage in the following activities in supporting researchers that use WHDH services:
- Design, develop, and maintain data integration pipelines to aggregate and harmonize biomedical data from various sources.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including data scientists, bioinformaticians, and software engineers, to ensure seamless data integration and accessibility.
- Implement and optimize ETL (Extract, Transform, Load) processes to support data analysis and reporting.
- Develop and maintain data models, schemas, and documentation to ensure data consistency and integrity.
- Develop/Implement privacy preserving linkage data pipelines as needed for research projects to integrate data from multiple sources.
- Perform data quality assessments and implement data validation procedures to ensure accuracy and reliability.
- Troubleshoot and resolve data integration issues, ensuring timely and accurate data delivery.
- Stay up to date with the latest advancements in biomedical data integration technologies and best practices.
- Work closely with data governance and security to ensure compliance with privacy regulations (e.g., NIST, HIPAA) when working with healthcare data; and address bias and fairness issues in AI models when dealing with sensitive health data.

Qualifications:

Required:
- Proven experience as a Data Architect or in a similar role.
- Expert knowledge of Microsoft Azure data services (e.g., Synapse, Data Factory, Data Lake Storage, Azure SQL Database).
- Proven experience in data integration, ETL processes, and database management.
- Proficiency in programming languages such as Python, R, or SQL.
- Experience with data integration tools and platforms (e.g., Talend, Informatica).
- Strong understanding of data modeling, data warehousing, and ETL processes.
- Knowledge of data governance and data quality principles.
- Strong understanding of biomedical data standards and formats (e.g., HL7, FHIR, DICOM).
- Excellent problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
- Strong communication and collaboration skills.

Preferred:
- Knowledge of machine learning and data analytics techniques.
- Familiarity with regulatory requirements and data privacy standards in the biomedical field.

Additionally required to be considered for level III:
- Demonstrated ability in mentoring colleagues in best practices regarding data use and data integrations
- Examples of a proactive approach to handling data integration issues


Work Type:

Full Time: 100%

This position may require some work to be performed in-person, onsite, at a designated campus work location. Some work may be performed remotely, at an offsite, non-campus work location.

Salary:

Minimum $90,000 ANNUAL (12 months)
Depending on Qualifications
The starting salary for the position is $90,000 but is negotiable based on experience and qualifications.
