Minimum Qualifications
Requires at least a baccalaureate degree in the field. Please contact your Human Resources office for an evaluation of education/experience in lieu of the required minimum qualifications.
Preferred Qualifications
Master's degree in Food Science, Food Technology, relevant engineering field or equivalent.
At least 5 years of experience in food product development, commercialization, or related areas.
Position Summary
The University of Georgia's Food Product Innovation and Commercialization (FoodPIC) Center seeks a dynamic and experienced Assistant Director to support our mission of enabling a growing food business economy in Georgia and providing UGA students with experiential learning opportunities. The Assistant Director will engage in client-faculty pre-proposal discussions, draft and present project proposals, develop project work plans upon project assignment and initiation, and oversee project portfolio progression. This individual will also be assigned client projects and be responsible for project execution for those projects. They will act as a coach for certain student assigned projects, alongside the FoodPIC Director. Working with the FoodPIC Director, the Assistant Director will develop or enhance additional service programs including laboratory testing, shelf life testing, and process safety advisement including thermal process exception and recommendation letters. The position will have an expectation of on-time reporting and clear project communication with clients as part of portfolio management and to ensure that best practices are used for report writing and project planning. The position assists the Director and Quality Systems Manager in emphasizing the necessity of safe food production by ensuring effective Food Safety plans are in place, adherence to Good Manufacturing Practices (GMPs) in the facility and overseeing of audit activity.

  • Food Business management experience in R&D and/or Plant Operations.
  • Knowledge of food industry regulations, including FDA and USDA compliance.
  • Demonstrated ability to design and launch consumer or industrial food products.
  • Expertise in some relevant facet of food processing and/or food design.
  • Proficiency in business development and grant writing.

  • Design and implement food product, process and package development projects for clients.
  • Collaborate with researchers and industry partners to design and execute innovative food processing and packaging solutions.
  • Monitor industry trends and emerging technologies to align FoodPIC services with market needs.

  • Conduct planning, briefing, execution and debriefing for trials to ensure good execution and continuous improvement.
  • With other team members, execute trials & post-trial cleaning.

  • Ensure the proper maintenance and functionality of laboratory and pilot plant equipment.

Industry Engagement and Client Relations:

  • Develop and maintain partnerships with food companies, entrepreneurs, and other public and private food business support entities.
  • Serve as a primary point of contact for strategic partners including vendors of ingredient, packaging, equipment and laboratory services.
  • Promote FoodPIC services through outreach activities, workshops, and networking events.
  • Interact with UGA and other University Business Acceleration programs.
