Press Setup Operator

Job Summary and Mission

To run an automatic press to produce quality inserts that are within the correct quality criteria.

Key Job Responsibilities

Assemble tooling and powder for the order being pressed. Verify that the initial pieces are on weight and thickness and are of acceptable visual quality. Make adjustments to eliminate quality defects. Set-up automatic pick-off and weight control units adjust according to order label. Dis-assemble and clean press rams and supply powder to press as needed during the run. Clean press and vacuum press area at end of each shift. Scan correct production information. Complete all appropriate test samples, record all required information. handle scrap appropriately. May be required to perform press set-up and tipsetter function as production needs require.

Key Job Accountabilities

Run orders by priority. Commitment to working safely and understand all safety procedures. Deviations in routine are handled according to operating procedures and/or work instructions. Operator responsible for following inspection control plan, defect criteria, assuring product is processed according to proper routings, specifications and the quantity and style are correct. Work to meet daily departmental production goals. Communicate safety, quality, and product issues with the supervisor, team members, and across shifts.

Knowledge and Skills

Perform basic math. Ability to handle green (soft) carbide inserts with fingers and tools without damaging or chipping the inserts. Must be able to operate a personal computer to access the QMS, SAP MII, green insert Defect Criteria, and operating procedures. Must be able to read and understand blueprints and routings. Is able to understand the indexable insert identification system. Able to clean the rams and dies using approved methods. Ability to use 30x microscope and weight scale to ensure compliance to specifications and green inserts defect criteria. Is able to operate tray loaders, tonnage meters, and vacuum systems. Ability to handle powder to prevent contamination. Ability to communicate with peers, supervisors, and support functions both orally and in writing. Proficiency reached through on-the-job training within eight (8) to twelve (12) months.

Work Environment

The environment with controlled temperatures and dust collection systems. Safety glasses with side shields, safety shoes, and gloves required. Cut-resistant gloves when necessary.

Physical Demands

Approximately eight hours standing and frequent use of arms, hands, and fingers with break opportunities every two hours per eight-hour work period. Intermittent walking, reaching, and scoping throughout eight hour work period. Frequent lifting of insert trays, press parts, powder cans, and powder hopper weighing no less than five (5) pounds and no more than twenty-five (25) pounds.

Problem Solving

Follow control plan and defect criteria. Instructions communicated orally and carried out according to standing guidelines. Problems are solved by using learned skills, following control plan and defect criteria, and working with other pressing personnel. Operators work to standard operating procedures (oral and/or written instructions). Operators cannot approve a product that does not conform to specifications.

Qualifications:
