Description

The Engineering Manager, as part of the Expeditionary Leadership team, is responsible for the safety, quality, and oversight of the Huntsville Engineering Team. This is a hands-on position and will be responsible for overseeing all technical activities of assigned projects and programs including planning, scheduling, and managing personnel and engineering work to ensure effective coordination and execution. The Engineering Manager must possess sufficient technical knowledge of their programs to identify problems, provide guidance to staff, and ensure the work product is completed on time and budget and fulfills requirements. Required to proactively lead improvement initiatives. The Engineering Manager position offers a variety of engineering opportunities including testing, design, analysis, management, and prototyping. Position is 100% on-site.

This position is responsible for coordinating all technical activities of assigned programs including planning, scheduling, and managing personnel and engineering work to ensure effective coordination of projects. The engineering manager must possess sufficient technical knowledge of their programs to identify problems, provide guidance to staff, and be sure the work product fulfills requirements. Proactively lead improvement initiatives.

Essential Duties:



  • Supervise and develop a team of 8-12 engineer, designers, and/or technicians.
  • Completes annual performance review process for direct reports
  • Sets and achieves goals and assists direct reports in doing likewise
  • Contributes to team efforts by accomplishing related results in a cooperative and supportive manner, makes and keeps commitments and expects same of direct reports
  • Complies with Engineering Playbook and works to optimize its content
  • Manages budgets, costs, and schedule inputs for design assignments, participate in technical reviews
  • Manage new product development, support the production support team (ECR/ECO's), and team priorities
  • Support proposal, technical write ups, and provide quotes to Sales and BD
  • Demonstrate understanding of applicable MIL and commercial standards essential for equipment design and compliance (preferred)
  • Hands-on building, fitting, and testing prototypes
  • Check drawings and designs to ensure compliance to HDT and design specifications
  • Adhere and train to company revision control practices and ISO processes
  • Interpret specific system and product design requirements which ensure conformance to functional, customer, and operations/manufacturing criteria
  • Interface internally with all facility associates, management, and staff
  • Interface externally with customers and/or vendors for the purpose of furnishing, obtaining, and/or clarifying information
  • Adheres to all quality and safety standards
  • Supports other projects and performs duties as assigned
  • Provide engineering program/project technical support to both internal and external customers
  • Supports, communicates, reinforces and defends the mission, values and culture of the organization
  • Available for limited travel


Education/Experience/Other Skills & Abilities:



  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or similar
  • Ten (10) plus years of experience;
  • Must be able to speak, read and understand English
  • Military/ defense experience preferred.
  • Product development experience- concept through production release.
  • Minimum 5 years System Engineering experience, or equal experience; previous management experience is a plus.
  • Experience in a softgoods/ fabric environment a plus
  • Solidworks/ SolidWorks Electrical/FEA experience preferred AutoCAD experience helpful.
  • Prior experience with MIL-810 Environmental Testing and other Mil-STD Testing procedures for Expeidtionay products preferred.
  • Prior experience with MIL-461 EMI Testing a plus
  • Comfortable with shop/laboratory and equipment.
  • Effective oral and written communication skills.
  • Good interpersonal skills.
  • Routinely punctual.
  • Mechanically inclined and able to problem solve with little information.
  • Ability to work autonomously, prioritize work assignments, and multi-task to meet deadlines.
  • Ability to offer their own opinions and commentaries while being flexible and responsive to constructive feedback by managers and peers.
  • Application of technical principles/techniques from established practices, as well as a functional knowledge/understanding of mechanical engineering processes, techniques, and practices to quickly/accurately perceive the fit, form, function, and manufacturability of design.
  • SAP experience a plus.
  • PC-based computer experience including Excel, Word, and PowerPoint is essential;
  • Basic knowledge/understanding of industry standards (ISO, etc.) and codes.
  • Strong, proven organizational and time management skills.
  • Strong, proven problem solving and analytical skills.
  • Possesses quality orientation and high attention to detail
  • Possesses strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work with customers, vendors, employees and managers at all levels within the company
  • Possesses strong computer skills with demonstrated proficiency in standard business software packages (e.g., Microsoft Office) including Microsoft Project
