Job Overview

The Echocardiography Education Specialist is responsible for overseeing the education and training of sonographers, fellows, physicians, students, and preceptees in pediatric echocardiography. This role involves mentoring and providing instruction on advanced cardiac ultrasound techniques, as well as managing the education program for the echo lab. The Specialist performs echocardiograms on patients ranging from neonatal to adult, focusing on congenital heart disease, and assists with complex cases and cardiovascular malformations.

Qualifications

  • Education: High School Diploma or GED. Associates degree and/or graduate of a formal sonography program is required.
  • Experience: Minimum 5 years of pediatric cardiac sonography experience. Experience in pediatric echo education.
  • Equivalency: Completion of an accredited Echocardiography Technical training program may substitute for one year of experience
  • Certification(s):
  • Pediatric Echocardiography Registry required;
    • Registered Diagnostic Cardiac Sonographer, Pediatric Echocardiography (RDCS, PE) through ARDMS or
    • Registered Congenital Cardiac Sonographer (RCCS) through CCI
  • BLS/CPR from the American Heart Association with at least 6 months left before expiration is required upon hire

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

An employee in this position may be called upon to do any or all the following essential functions. These examples do not include all the functions which the employee may be expected to perform.

Oversees the scheduling, coordination, and management of education projects and initiatives for the echo lab, as defined by leadership. Mentors and trains sonographers, fellows, physicians, students, and preceptees.

Supports and provides guidance to echo lab educators and learners to ensure the delivery of a high-quality education program. Builds trust and resolves conflicts within teams.

Contributes to the development and implementation of educational offerings, including organizing curriculum, speakers, and CME accreditation for echo lab meetings. Ensures completion of sonographer competencies.

Assists in maintaining IAC accreditation and participates in quality improvement initiatives. Adheres to quality assurance/control (QA/QC) and safety standards, including those from The Joint Commission, IAC, and State of Colorado.

Attends mandatory meetings, training sessions, and completes all required education. Adapts to shift scheduling, location, call requirements, and weekend assignments as needed.

Independently performs high-quality echocardiograms on patients from newborns to adults, assessing congenital heart disease with varying complexity. Demonstrates expertise in echocardiography and adheres to scanning protocols across the system of care.

Creates accurate preliminary reports and performs necessary measurements. Alerts attending physician of critical findings.

Communicates clearly and respectfully with patients, families, coworkers, and others, providing detailed, age-appropriate descriptions of procedures.

Assists with cardiac procedures as needed, using proper disinfection techniques in accordance with lab policies.

Demonstrates and maintains proficiency in using all aspects of Electronic Medical Records (EMR) and Picture Archiving and Communication System (PACS) relevant to echocardiography functions.

Maintains ultrasound equipment and promptly reports any malfunctions or errors to the appropriate service engineer or Biomed for repair.

Adheres to department policies, procedures, and protocols, addressing concerns related to non-compliance or patient/staff safety. Maintains a registry of credentials and certifications.

Salary Information

Annual Salary Range (Based on 40 hours worked per week): $101,789.74 to $152,684.61
Hourly Salary Range: $48.94 to $73.41
