The Opportunity

The Loss Control Technical Support Coordinator Intern will gain exposure to how loss data is being used to develop risk mitigation strategies and tools to be shared with underwriting, insureds, brokers and others. There will be considerable opportunity to apply research skills with identifying risk trends and project develop skills. There will be exposure to legal and regulatory aspects of losses and typical elements of insurance coverages and claims.

This internship role will be based in New York City.

Responsibilities:

  • Assist in developing a system to track and trend inspection/survey findings and associated recommendations for property and casualty business. Correlate the property and casualty loss control survey findings and recommendation compliance with our claims trends. This will enable adequate targeting and education related to those identified higher risk areas.
  • Gain knowledge of construction project wrap up business and associated exposures related to (OCIP)/(CCIP) accounts. Working alongside our Casualty Loss Control Expert, the intern will understand and apply the acquired analytic skills for these projects to include: contractor's experience in relation to a project, length of the project timeline (time pressure/cost pressure/adequate CV based on square footage), contractor capacity, Geotech review, project complexity and issues with framing, foundation, surrounding exposure, project exposures to loss, natural disaster (flood, wildfire), etc.
  • Develop a loss control referral application with template data fields and standard responses, evaluation summaries and recommendations. This will provide for a better system of tracking and trending referrals and keep track of what is bound, declined, etc.
  • Intern will gain an understanding of UW tiering (appetite for marketing purposes) for healthcare SLF, ALF and ILF facilities: preferred, moderate, least preferred, through participation in loss control referrals. This will involve accessing the CMS Compare Website or other websites, e.g., state ALF inspection sites, for facility ratings and inspection reports and then developing a template for a written executive summary of the facility risk with advisory recommendations for underwriting the risk. [to be reviewed and approved by Sr Liv UW manager and LC HC expert]
    • Using existing referral reports as a guide and example, develop a report template for use by LC Expert to effectively communicate findings and advisory recommendations regarding the risk to UW regarding moderate and least preferred Senior Living facilities.
    • Create a new template for loss control referrals for Assisted Living facilities in keeping with state requirements, with similar purpose as SNFs referral report.
  • Research and develop info sheets as part of the MRSNA Mitigating the Risk series on various property and casualty exposures
  • Update loss control resource library

Job Requirements:

  • Major: Risk Management, Insurance, Business, Economics, Accounting, Computer and/or Accounting
  • Open to all Freshman, Sophomore, Junior, Senior and Master's students
  • Experience with MS Office Suite and Power BI
  • Must possess communication and presentation skills

This role has the opportunity to be based in NYC. The base range for this internship will be $22 - $33 per hour. The hourly estimate displayed represents the typical salary range for candidates hired in this position in NYC. Factors that may be used to determine your actual rate will include your specific skills, how many years of experience you have and comparison to other employees already in this role.
