About the Department:

The Human Resources Department supports the University's mission through the development and implementation of policies, programs and practices that attract, compensate, retain and reward faculty and staff.

About the Position:

The Human Resources Assistant provides flexible, hands-on support across various HR teams, with primary role responsibility to the Benefits and Faculty & Staff Engagement teams. This role involves assisting with day-to-day operations, maintaining accurate records, supporting HR programs, and responding to employee inquiries.

This is a hybrid position. The candidate will be expected to be working on-site at least (2) days a week.

Responsibilities:

Benefits Administration and Customer Service Support



  • Assists with various benefits processes, including health and retirement enrollments, updates, terminations, and troubleshooting;
  • Utilizes Commonwealth of Virginia and internal university systems and resources to problem solve and answer questions related to employee benefits;
  • Provides excellent in-person and virtual customer service, responds to employee benefits inquiries (calls, emails, instant messages) within 24 - 48 hours, to identify or coordinate resolutions;
  • Assists in downloading and auditing reports, ensuring employee changes and election contributions match the audit reports; and
  • Maintains accurate benefits records and documentation.


Faculty and Staff Engagement Support



  • Assists in the planning and execution of employee engagement programs, initiatives and events;
  • Utilizes internal university systems and resources to problem solve and answer questions related to reward and recognition programs, flexible work, performance evaluations, or other employee engagement programs;
  • Provides administrative support, including accurate record keeping, for employee recognition programs and performance evaluation processes;
  • Provides excellent in-person and virtual customer service, responds to employee inquiries (calls, emails, instant messages) within 24 hours, to identify and/or coordinate resolutions; and
  • Maintains accurate employee engagement and performance evaluation process records and documentation.


General/Floating HR Support



  • Assists in maintaining and updating employee records, ensuring compliance with policies and processes;
  • Supports special projects and cross-functional HR initiatives; and
  • Provides temporary or as-needed assistance to various HR teams, including Talent Acquisition, Learning & Organizational Development, Employee Relations, and HR Customer Service.


Required Qualifications:



  • High school diploma or equivalent;
  • Some administrative or HR-related experience;
  • Experience collaborating and communicating effectively with individuals of diverse and differing needs;
  • Experience using the internet, web-based portals, MS Office, and standard office computer systems;
  • Excellent customer service skills;
  • Excellent accuracy and attention to detail;
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills;
  • Ability to prioritize daily activities and willingness to be flexible;
  • Ability to work both independently and with a team to meet deadlines; and
  • Ability to engage and communicate with empathy.


Preferred Qualifications:



  • Bachelor's degree in related field;
  • Human Resources and Benefits-related experience;
  • Experience with Human Resource Information Systems such as Banner, Learning Management Systems such as Cornerstone, and marketing material platforms such as Canva;
  • Experience working in a higher education, government, or healthcare environment;
  • Knowledge of basic Human Resources practices;
  • Spanish language fluency; and
  • Ability to create graphics and flyers for marketing and social media.
