Essential Job Duties |
Join our team as an
Advanced-Level HVAC Technician, where you will play a vital role in
maintaining, repairing, and installing complex HVAC and refrigeration systems. This position ensures the reliable operation of critical heating, ventilation, air conditioning, and refrigeration equipment across a large university setting.
Working at an advanced technical level, you will handle a variety of systems, including hydronic, pneumatic, and electrical, and may serve as a team leader, technical trainer, or supervisor when required. We're seeking a skilled professional with expertise in

Key responsibilities and duties include but not limited to:
Perform maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair of HVAC and refrigeration systems, including air conditioning units, refrigerant compressors, and hydronic systems. Install and commission HVAC/R equipment, components, and controls in accordance with industry standards and safety regulations.- Operate and maintain pumps, valves, actuators, VAV boxes, VFDs, and pressure-reducing valves.
- Inspect, diagnose, and repair pneumatic, electrical, and electronic control systems.
- Maintain and repair electrical systems and components up to 600 volts, including lighting systems and associated fixtures.
- Conduct preventative maintenance on HVAC/R systems to ensure optimal performance and energy efficiency.
- Service and repair potable and non-potable water systems, sanitary waste systems, specialty plumbing, and drainage systems.
Interpret blueprints, schematics, and technical documents to diagnose and resolve system issues.- Train and mentor junior technicians in proper HVAC/R procedures and safety protocols.
- Ensure compliance with local, state, and national safety and building codes.
- Respond to emergency calls and provide timely solutions to critical system failures.

Other Responsibilities |
- Participate in the quarterly on-call program, carrying a pager for one week at a time. This duty rotates every ten to fourteen weeks.
- Report to work during adverse weather conditions as essential personnel, even if the University is operating on an alternate schedule.
- Assist with snow and ice removal under the direction of a supervisor.

Qualifications
Minimum Experience/Education |
High school diploma or equivalency; or demonstrated possession of the competencies necessary to perform the work. Some positions may require special licenses or certification(s).
Optional Guidelines: Experience in the trade(s) areas related to the area of assignment may be substituted on a year-for-year basis. |
Other Required Qualifications |
- Familiarity with local, state, and national codes relevant to assigned trades.
- Technical training and expertise in the HVAC trade.
- Strong verbal communication skills to interact effectively with supervisors and the general public, as well as the ability to understand verbal and written instructions regarding work assignments.
- Proficiency in computer literacy, including the use of handheld electronic devices for fieldwork.
- Physical ability to lift up to 60 pounds, with or without reasonable accommodations.
- Safely perform tasks on extension ladders, high lifts, and in confined spaces.

Preferred Qualifications |
- Multi-trade experience, with a focus on HVAC, electrical, steam, plumbing, and controls.
- Experience in the operation, troubleshooting and repair of building automation systems and controls.

- Valid North Carolina driver's license is required within 60 days of hire and must be maintained.
