University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus

Department: Biomedical Informatics

Job Title: Post-Doctoral Fellow

Position #00814725: - Requisition #:36061

Job Summary:

The Greene Lab in the Department of Biomedical Informatics at the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus is seeking a computational Postdoctoral Fellow with a background in human genomics, computational biology, bioinformatics, machine learning, and/or related fields. Individuals from diverse backgrounds are strongly encouraged to apply.

The Greene lab works near the intersection of machine learning, public data, and transcriptomics. Recent manuscripts from the group have rigorously probed the performance of deconvolution algorithms, have estimated demographic factors associated with scientists who get quoted in Nature's news content, have examined the extent to which deep learning is necessary for certain problems, and have reported on software that supports the use of large language models to improve scientific writing with precise attribution. The lab emphasizes rigor in research and has established processes to support this.

Previous postdoctoral trainees from the lab have pursued and secured positions as academic faculty, as well as research positions in both industry and non-profit labs. We are a hybrid in-person group, with flexibility as needed and in agreement with the PI.

Current project funding includes support for work in microbial systems, disentangling the genetic basis of co-occurring conditions in Down Syndrome, understanding transcriptomic patterns in high-grade serous ovarian cancer, and science of science work related to the Common Fund Data Ecosystem. Methodological avenues include new techniques for integrating large collections of -omic profiles, using knowledge graphs, and/or linking across data types.

Key Responsibilities:

60% Perform Primary Research

  • Participate in the design and initiation of research projects
  • Independently carry out literature reviews, analysis, and interpretation of results with guidance from the PI
  • Collaborate with the PI, other members of the lab, and local and international collaborators
  • Maintain transparent and easy-to-follow documentation of research projects from start to finish, including reproducible and sharable code.

25% Communicate ideas and findings

  • Present research in progress at lab meetings, project meetings, and 1-on-1 PI meetings
  • Submit abstracts and present results at local and (inter)national conferences
  • Write and publish manuscripts
  • Actively pursue fellowship awards and assist the PI in grant writing

5% Train and Mentor

  • Write and share workflows and protocols
  • Mentor and train graduate students and research associates

5% Administrative Duties

  • Complete required research training
  • Perform general administrative duties as requested by the PI

5% Career Development

  • Attend career development seminars and networking events
  • Complete an Individualized Development Plan (IDP) to be discussed with the PI annually
  • Keep CV up to date

Work Location:

Hybrid - this role is eligible for a hybrid schedule of 3 days per week on campus and as needed for in-person meetings.
