Purpose

Assists the Horticulture team in the daily operations and maintenance of the living collections and grounds.

Responsibilities
  • Maintenance of the living collections tasks include planting, raking, weeding, mowing, watering, mulching, pruning, shaping, Integrated Pest Management, removal of debris litter, and animal scat, repairs to irrigation, bed construction, use of power equipment, update of plant signage, process seeds, repair of decomposed granite paths, and other minor hardscape repairs.

  • Effectively coordinate and communicate with members of the horticulture team and all other Center teams. Assist the public in answering questions relating to the Wildflower Center and horticulture, and strive to ensure positive guest experiences.

  • Train, direct, and work with regular volunteers, community service volunteers, interns, and contractors on a daily basis to accomplish required tasks.

  • Participate in education and mission-related activities such as volunteer training, media, tours, festivals, teaching classes and special events.

  • Perform associated administrative duties. Comply with all safety policies, practices, and procedures. Report all unsafe activities to supervisors and Safety Coordinator.

  • Other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications
  • High school diploma or GED.

  • Skilled in the use of hand and power tools applicable to trade.

  • At least 4 years of landscaping maintenance experience;minimum of 2 years of professional horticultural experience.

  • At least one year of supervisory experience.

  • Must have substantial knowledge of horticultural techniques and plant identification.

  • Must work well with and supervise groups of people, be well organized, detail-oriented, take direction well from supervisor, and have excellent communication skills. Must be able to work independently with little supervision. Attention to safety and guest services is essential.

  • Basic computer skills (MS Word, Excel, email) required.

  • Ability to work in tight spaces and in all weather conditions.

  • Ability to acquire First Aid certification within 30 days of hire.

Relevant education and experience may be substituted as appropriate.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Extensive knowledge of Texas native plants or ecological systems.

  • Bachelor degree in horticulture or related field.

  • Skill and willingness to make public presentations and conduct media interviews.

  • Current Pest Control Applicator's License.

Driving Required

This job requires a class "C" operator's driver's license. The applicant selected must provide a current three year driving record from the current state of residence. If not currently a Texas resident, a Texas driver's license must be obtained within 30 days of becoming a Texas resident. Employees who are required to have a CDL are subject to drug and alcohol testing (pre-employment, post-accident, reasonable suspicion, random, return-to-duty, and follow-up drug and alcohol testing).

Salary Range

$42,000 + depending on qualifications

Working Conditions
  • May work around standard office conditions.

  • Work outside in tight spaces and in all weather conditions.

Work Shift
  • Tuesday - Saturday, 7:30 am - 4:00 pm

  • An occasional evening or weekend day may be required for mission-related events.
