Position Summary
Under the direct supervision of a Registered Nurse (RN) or Licensed Practical Nurse II (LPN), the Nursing Technician delivers patient care utilizing the Relationship-Based Care model as a framework. The Nurse Technician provides care and takes initiative to improve patient outcomes by supporting Shared Leadership, Evidence Based Practice, Relationship Based Care and standards of nursing excellence in clinical practice. Through therapeutic relationships with patients, families, self and colleagues, the Nurse Technician functions as an interdisciplinary team member who provides patient care and fulfills unit and organizational goals.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • A Nursing Technician typically administer, or assist with, basic personal hygiene to provide comfort and cleanliness, such as bathing, toileting, and feeding of patients.
  • Carry out, or assist with, specific therapeutic procedures in a given clinical division which may include administering colostomy care, observing IV flow rates, applying heat and cold to adult patients, observing chest tube connections for security of fit, administering cast and brace care, and dispensing eye care to comatose patient.
  • Carry out, or assist with, specific diagnostic procedures in a given clinical division which may include taking temperature and blood pressure; collecting urine and stool specimens for laboratory; assisting physicians with physical examinations; observing neurological signs; and checking circulation of fingers and toes of casted limbs.
  • Administer to the physical needs of patients by providing appropriate support, giving backrubs, feeding patients, positioning patients, and adjusting side rail and restraints.
  • Maintain suitable environment for patient by changing linens, tidying the premises, caring for equipment, all according to specific directions, and by following exact nursing orders for ventilation, heat and light.
  • Chart and report nursing care activities and observations.
  • Assist in the care of acutely ill patients by performing specially designated, technical aspects of patient's total nursing care.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
  • Perform other related duties and participate in special projects as assigned.


  • Minimum Qualifications

    1. High school graduation or equivalent.
    2. Possession of a CNA license from an accredited institution/school/program.
    3. Registered and active in the
      Illinois Department of Public Health - Health Care Work Registry

    4. Current AHA BLS/CPR and other required unit specific certifications
    5. Effective communication skills (oral and written) that facilitate therapeutic relationships between patients, family, and health care providers
    6. Intermediate computer skills with the ability to become proficient in the Electronic Health Record (EHR) with on-the-job training
    7. Excellent attendance, interpersonal skills and work history required.
